The time it takes to pass your ADR training is usually dependent on your current driving experience.

If you’re a well-versed and confident HGV driver, you won’t take as long to pass as someone with far less experience. But don’t let that put you off.

This is arguably more important in ADR driving than in any other type of driving, given the risks involved, so we highly recommend covering all the old ground you need if it’s been a long time since you’ve been behind the wheel professionally.

Functionally, HGV driving and ADR driving are extremely similar. So, if you’re already a proficient HGV driver, there’s every reason to believe the same will be true if you train to earn your ADR licence.

However, it’s the specifics of the cargo being carried that present the main difference. HGV drivers can transport a whole host of goods. However, ADR drivers are specifically tasked with carrying hazardous items, like corrosive liquids, flammable gases, etc.

The added pressure and danger is why drivers must undertake special ADR training if they wish to move goods of this sort.

Similarly to other types of professional driving, ADR drivers need to stick to the rules and regulations surrounding the amount of time they’re able to spend on the road without taking a break.

This is not only for the safety of the ADR driver but also for other road users and pedestrians.

These rules specify:

• Drivers must not exceed more than 10 hours of driving per day
• Drivers must not be on duty for more than 11 hours per day
• Drivers must not exceed 56 hours of driving per week
