The Category D licence, or Cat D, is required to drive a bus or coach within the UK and Europe. It allows drivers to operate vehicles with up to 64 passengers, including single and double-deckers.
Cat D drivers can earn a competitive salary, with averages up to £40k per year. Job satisfaction is high, as professional bus and coach drivers enjoy seeing the country while working, along with the independence of life on the road compared with office-based roles.
The Cat D licence is a great starting point if you currently only hold a car licence. To qualify, you must hold a full car licence, be at least 18 years old, and meet the necessary medical fitness requirements.
You’ll also gain the Category D1 licence as part of your Cat D, enabling you to drive minibuses.
This licence permits you to drive vehicles with:
16 passenger seats or less
A length not exceeding 8m
A trailer with a maximum capacity of 750kg
Cat D1 drivers can earn a handsome average salary of £30,000, which could rise to over £35,000 the more experience is gathered.

Driving Success
Passenger Carrying Vehicle (PCV) training prepares you to drive buses and coaches safely and professionally. With buses and coaches operating across cities, towns, and long-distance routes in the UK, PCV drivers play a vital role in transporting passengers efficiently and safely.
PCV driving offers a rewarding career with opportunities for steady employment, competitive pay, and job satisfaction while keeping the public moving every day.
What duties does a coach or bus driver complete?
Depending on the position you accept once you complete your PCV training, you may take on jobs such as a public bus driver or a private-hire coach driver – which can affect your day-to-day duties.
However, both are enjoyable, public-facing roles that involve the completion of similar duties while chatting to the public.
Typical duties can include:
- Meeting and greeting passengers
- Helping passengers on and off, including using mobility aids like ramps
- Driving safely and competently, no matter the road or traffic conditions
- Completing basic vehicle checks
- Stopping at pre-booked locations at certain times
- Advising customers on everything from stops and times of journeys to giving directions
- Driving short and longer distances – depending on the route and the day
If you work on public transport, there may also be an element of cash handling as you take fares, which gives drivers extra, more serious responsibilities.
What can you do as a minibus driver?
Looking into PCV training and wondering what you could do with it?
There are actually a vast array of jobs you can do as a minibus driver with a PCV licence, including:
- Joining a taxi fleet – giving larger groups or those with large luggage a travel option
- Supporting charities or religious groups in your local area, including food banks
- Becoming a council driver to help students get to school or college
- Driving adults with additional needs or the elderly to community outreach programs or hospitals for appointments
- Carrying school children to locations outside of school premises, including swimming lessons or extracurricular activities
Many of these positions are available on a professional or voluntary basis – allowing you to complete them as part of, or to supplement, your main job or even in your spare time if you want to give back to your community.
Similarly, as most bus routes tend to have regular passengers, you can keep an eye on more vulnerable locals, such as the elderly or those with disabilities, which can be very rewarding.
Benefits of completing PCV training
Most coach drivers will have the added benefit of spending more time with their passengers, as they can drive them to a range of destinations, from day trips to the coast or even coach holidays which cover a few days.
This is a great way to see more of the UK, brings the added benefit of receiving tips – which is unlikely on public buses, and can vastly increase your job satisfaction.
Bus drivers, on the other hand, can choose to run routes near or in their local area, which can be a beneficial way of seeing people you know well, helping you to stay in touch.
