For how long does a driving test pass certificate remain valid?

The period after receiving your driving test pass certificate is an extremely exciting time. But for how long does a driving test pass certificate remain valid?

Keep reading as the experts at HGV Training Network break down everything you need to know about this very important piece of paper.

What is a driving test pass certificate?

A driving test certificate is an official document which is evidence which is given in receipt of successfully passing a practical driving test. It’s often printed immediately upon completion. These documents are provided by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) if you’re in the UK.

A driving test pass certificate isn’t the same as a driving licence. However, it may be used temporarily to bridge the gap before receiving your full licence.

The driving test pass certificate can also provide a wealth of helpful information, such as:

• Date of completion
• Licence number (this can be used to apply for car insurance)
• Test location and examiner’s name

Then, on average, you can expect your full licence card to arrive by post within three weeks.

So, how long will it remain valid?

The driving test pass certificate doesn’t necessarily expire. However, it should only be used temporarily as you wait for your official driving licence.

When will I receive my full driving licence?

Your card is expected to arrive within three weeks. So it shouldn’t be necessary to use your driving test pass certificate for too long.

However, if you haven’t received your licence card within two years, you may have to retake your practical driving test. If you’ve been waiting a while and there’s still no sign of your official licence, it’s worth getting in touch with the DVLA.

What about for HGV drivers?

For HGV drivers, obtaining your licence is a little bit of a different process.

After passing your driving test, it’s essential that you apply for your HGV licence within 12 months. You must submit your driving test pass certificate and fill out any necessary forms. Failing to do so can result in having to retake the test.
