In Britain, the minimum age for undergoing HGV driver training and obtaining a Category C (rigid) licence is typically 18 years old.

For Category C+E (articulated) licence, the minimum age is usually 21 years old.

As well as being 18 years of age or over, you must have a valid standard driver’s licence, be medically fit to drive and gain a provisional HGV licence.

There are three types of HGV licences in the UK including:

Category C1: Allows you to drive vehicles weighing between 3.5 and 7.5 tonnes, such as horse boxes. If you desire to become an ambulance driver, you’ll need to acquire this licence.

Category C: Permits you to drive rigid vehicles over 3.5 tonnes, but not exceeding 32 tonnes.

You could work seven days a week if you wish, but you must follow the legal requirement for HGV driving working hours, which are as follows:

• Work up to a maximum of 9 hours per day, or 10 hours per day twice a week.
• Not exceeding 56 hours maximum per week.
• After every 4.5 hours driven, you must take a 45-minute rest – tachographs are used to monitor driving times and break periods.
• Have 45 hours of rest per week.
• Work a maximum of 90 hours over two weeks – a 56-hour week must be followed by a 34-hour week or less.

On average, the practical side of HGV training in Durham should be completed after around five days.

However, the entire process can take between eight to ten weeks to finish. This includes driving lessons for the vehicles you wish to drive and gaining your licence once you’ve passed your theory and practical tests.
