Frequently Asked Questions about CPC qualifications

What dangerous goods are moved in ADR driving?

The difference between standard HGV driving jobs and ADR driving jobs is that ADR drivers are charged with the safe transportation of vehicles carrying dangerous goods, often in tank containers. Naturally, this poses a greater risk than moving standard goods, which is why a special licence is needed under UK law.

Once qualified as an ADR driver, some of the cargo you may transport includes:

    • Toxic gases
    • Infectious substances
    • Flammable liquids
    • Explosive materials
    • Corrosive materials

As these items are used widely across various industries in the UK, there is always a need for reliable drivers to transport them safely – that’s where you come in.

With HGV Training Network, we’ll arm you with the skills, knowledge and experience you need to move these goods from A to B safely.

Do I need to take my ADR training in Manchester?

Our HGV training centre in Manchester is the ideal place to undertake your ADR training if you live in the local area. But it’s not the only place you can go.

If you live a little further afield, or it’s more convenient for you to travel to a separate location, you could attend any one of our 50 training centres scattered throughout the UK.

So, no matter where you’re based in the country, you’re never more than a stone’s throw away from a training centre to meet your needs. We can also help you earn your Driver CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence) if you’re still in need of one.

How long does ADR training in Manchester take?

The time it takes to pass your ADR training is usually dependent on your current driving experience.

If you’re a well-versed and confident HGV driver, you won’t take as long to pass as someone with far less experience. But don’t let that put you off.

On average, ADR training can be completed in a matter of days, not weeks, meaning you could be back out on the open road driving ADR tankers in almost no time at all.

Can I take refresher training for ADR driving with HGVTN?

Absolutely. If you’re a former driver and have been away from the profession for a while, refresher courses are the perfect way to ensure you still have all the skills and knowledge you need to drive to an excellent standard.

This is arguably more important in ADR driving than in any other type of driving, given the risks involved, so we highly recommend covering all the old ground you need if it’s been a long time since you’ve been behind the wheel professionally.

What is the difference between an ADR driver and an HGV driver?

Functionally, HGV driving and ADR driving are extremely similar. So, if you’re already a proficient HGV driver, there’s every reason to believe the same will be true if you train to earn your ADR licence.

However, it’s the specifics of the cargo being carried that present the main difference. HGV drivers can transport a whole host of goods. However, ADR drivers are specifically tasked with carrying hazardous items, like corrosive liquids, flammable gases, etc.

The added pressure and danger is why drivers must undertake special ADR training if they wish to move goods of this sort.

Are there any driving limits for ADR drivers?

Similarly to other types of professional driving, ADR drivers need to stick to the rules and regulations surrounding the amount of time they’re able to spend on the road without taking a break.

This is not only for the safety of the ADR driver but also for other road users and pedestrians.

    These rules specify:

    • Drivers must not exceed more than 10 hours of driving per day
    • Drivers must not be on duty for more than 11 hours per day
    • Drivers must not exceed 56 hours of driving per week

If you would like more information on the regulations applicable in ADR driving before you begin training, feel free to explore The Carriage of Dangerous Goods and Use of Transportable Pressure Equipment Regulations on the Health and Safety Executive website.
