Why train as an HGV driver in Wales?
Road haulage is the backbone of the Welsh economy. Welsh Government figures show that 95 million tonnes of goods were lifted in Wales by HGVs in 2023, with the majority of that freight moving within Wales itself. Everything from food and drink to construction and quarried goods relies on qualified drivers to keep it moving.
Demand for drivers shows no signs of slowing. The Road Haulage Association (RHA) estimates there is a shortfall of around 40,000 – 60,000 new HGV drivers every year, for at least the next 5 years – something that Welsh operators and haulage businesses are noticing.
On pay, HGV drivers in Wales can earn upwards of £17 per hour, with newly qualified Class 2 drivers earning £28,000 to £34,000 per annum. Add in legally protected driving hours and the independence of life on the open road – it’s no wonder so many are making the switch.
