    Class 1 - (Cat C+E)

    Class 1 - (Cat C+E)

The largest vehicles on the road, Class 1 (C+E) drivers drive vehicles weighing from 7.5 – 44 tonnes with detachable trailers.

Class 1 drivers earn upwards of £40k per year for a 40–45-hour week, with specialist positions extending up to £55k per annum.

To get the C+E licence, you must already have a Car licence (Category B) so you will need prior driving experience before you apply for this one.

    Class 2 - (Cat C)

    Class 2 - (Cat C)

Drivers of Class 2 vehicles can legally drive vehicles over 7.5 tonnes with a rigid base if they do not exceed 32 tonnes.

Category C lorry drivers can earn up to £40k per year for a 40-45 hour driving week and can also drive fire engines and refuse lorries.

Most industries now heavily rely on Class 2 delivery drivers in towns and cities, so this can be an excellent option for new drivers.

    7.5 Ton - (Cat C1)

    7.5 Ton - (Cat C1)

The C1 licence is for smaller, rigid vehicles weighing between 3.5-7.5 tonnes and may be included on your current driver’s licence.

Final Mile lorries or C1 lorries are used for the final leg of delivery journeys and suit built-up areas that larger lorries cannot access.

Drivers delivering on this licence can earn around £30k p/A for a 40–45-hour week and can also consider driving ambulances or horse boxes.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between an HGV and an LGV?

LGV and HGV refer to the same vehicle/licence. Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) is the older term and Large Goods Vehicle (LGV) is a newer EU term.

I want to drive ambulances, which licence is right for me?

To drive an ambulance, you will need both a Cat C1 license – which enables you to drive vehicles up to 7.5 tonnes and a CPC qualification. Learn more about our ambulance driver training courses.

Will HGVTN finance options help me study?

Yes! Finance options can remove the worry of missed pay and enable you to focus on retraining and earning as quickly as you can.

Can I get a quote for HGV training before I start?

As each service is bespoke, HGVTN do not give generalised quotes – we need extra information before we can give a quote for driver training.

Where can I complete LGV/HGV training?

HGVTN has over 50 locations across England, Wales, and Scotland, ready for you to complete your training at a centre local to you.

How long will LGV/HGV training take?

Training time will depend on how much experience you have and can vary person-to-person. It can take between 5 days and 1 month on average.
