When you pass your HGV driving test, you’ll need to do an initial CPC. This is broken up into 2 modules:
Module 2 – Case Study Test
50 multi-choice questions that reflect real-life driver scenarios. You need 40 correct answers to pass. You can use our CPC theory training software to practice before you take the test.
Module 4 – Practical Demonstration Test
This is about what a driver does whilst not driving, mostly regarding safety. No actual driving is required, but you’ll show your answers practically in a real vehicle.
Drivers will then be issued with a Driver Qualification Card (DQC), valid for 5 years. Within that 5 years and every 5 years thereafter, drivers will be subject to periodic Driver CPC training.
All drivers need to complete 35 hours of training every 5 years to maintain their CPC licence, once their initial CPC expires. This is done through relaxed online classroom-style courses.
The 35 hours are split into 5 separate days, with each day lasting 7 hours. Don’t worry, there is no pass or fail element to the courses. All you need to do is show up.
Each new five-year period will begin from the expiry date of the driver’s current CPC qualification, not from the date which they reached the 35 hours training requirement.
Transport Manager CPC
This is a legal requirement of the operator licensing system for both standard, national and international licences.
A person within your business must have this CPC if you run a business with more than 1 Cat C or Cat D vehicle. It’s suitable for drivers looking to enter Road Haulage Transport Management.
Applicants for a Transport Managers Licence must show that they are “professionally competent” or that they employ a transport manager who meets the requirements.
Why do I need CPC Driver Training?
The Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (Driver CPC) is a qualification for bus, coach and lorry drivers.
According to an EU directive, drivers must hold a CPC alongside their other driver qualifications, such as an HGV licence.
If you drive a lorry over 3.5 tonnes or minibuses with 9 seats or more, you must complete a CPC course and obtain a Driver CPC.

Yes. Along with your HGV licence, you’ll need to complete your CPC as it is a legal requirement. If you don’t have a CPC, you’re unable to legally drive for a living. But don’t worry, your CPC training is included in our HGV training. Or, if you’re refreshing your CPC, we can provide this separately for you.
Why choose HGV Training Network for my CPC training?
We have years of combined experience in the driver training space and over 200 5-star reviews on Google from satisfied students. How will I get my Driver Qualification Card?
You’ll automatically receive your Driver Qualification Card once you’ve finished the minimum 35 hours of training, so there are no unnecessary delays between you passing your courses and being able to head out on the road.
