There are several different types of vehicles you could drive under an HGV licence.

CLASS 2 – CAT-C
The most common HGV licence in Britain is Category C, which enables drivers to drive rigid vehicles above 7.5 tonnes but not exceeding 32 tonnes.
This licence is ideal if you only hold a car licence, as most industries rely on class 2’s. Additionally, you can earn an average salary of up to £30,000 annually.

CLASS 1 – CAT C+E
The Category C+E licence, or Class 1, enables you to drive lorries with a maximum weight limit of 44 tonnes.
You must have a Cat C licence to gain a Class 1 – however, the extra qualification will pay off – drivers of C+E vehicles receive the highest salaries, with an average wage of £40k per year.

7.5 TON – CAT C1
The Cat C1 vehicles are ideal for delivery driving in compact areas. This licence is required by ambulance drivers, horsebox drivers and people entering professional driving for the first time. A CAT 1 licence allows drivers to drive vehicles above 3.5 tons up to 7.5 tons.
Drivers of CAT 1s can earn an excellent salary, with wages averaging £24,000 per year.
