How much does HGV training cost in London?
Costs vary depending on the licence category you’re going for and how much driving experience you already have, but here’s a guide to what most learners pay:

- Class 1 (C+E) training: £1,550 – £2,500

Which HGV Licence Category Do You Need?
There are two main licence categories most new HGV drivers are choosing between:
- Cat C is a Class 2 licence, covering vehicles over 3.5 tonnes.
- Cat C+E is a Class 1 licence, covering vehicles with a detachable trailer – and typically the better-paid, more flexible option.
One thing a lot of learners don’t realise: you don’t need to pass Cat C first. If you already hold a full car licence, you can train straight for your Class 1 (C+E) licence.
Before you start, you’ll need to meet a few basic requirements:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Hold a valid full UK car driving licence
- Pass a Group 2 medical examination
You’ll also need to pass DVSA theory tests – a combination of multiple-choice and hazard perception questions – before moving on to your practical test. And if you’re planning to drive for hire or reward (rather than just for your own business), you’ll need a Driver CPC alongside your licence.
