Wondering if you can drive while waiting for your digi card?
There are a variety of scenarios where the answer may differ. Often, you can’t drive while you wait for your initial card, but you can if you’re waiting for a replacement.
Keep reading for more information and how HGV Training Network is here to help.
What is a digi card?
A digi card, also often referred to as a digital tachograph driver card or tacho card, is an essential piece of equipment that’s used by drivers in the logistics sector – particularly by commercial lorry or bus drivers. These smart cards are used to measure work hours, breaks, speed, and distances in a comprehensive log of activity.
Tachograph cards are massively important and are a legal requirement for HGV drivers to ensure optimal safety and compliance for drivers and other road users.
These cards are used by drivers and the company to receive an accurate representation of activity, alongside enforcement officers, such as the police.
Tachograph cards can also come in an analogue format. However, digital cards are the industry standard throughout the UK.
How do I get a tachograph driver card?
You can submit an application form online or via post. A replacement fee will often apply.
If you have a lost, stolen, or malfunctioning card, you must also inform the DVLA promptly.
Can I drive while I wait for my replacement card?
If you’re in need of a replacement and have reported this to the DVLA, you can drive while you wait for your new card.
It’s essential that you apply for your new card within 7 days if lost or stolen, allowing you to drive for 15 days as you wait (strictly providing you have applied for your replacement).
As you wait, you must use VU (vehicle unit) records with your details filled in (including driving licence number or name) to log necessary data like hours, rest, and breaks. You should print them twice a day – at the start and end of your shift.
These must be accurate and handy to continue ensuring safety, and can also be used in the event of being stopped roadside. Larger vehicles, such as HGVs, used to relocate mass goods for businesses, similar to the UK.
What about your initial digital tachograph card?
No. If you are waiting for your initial tachograph card and have never been issued one, you cannot drive a heavy goods vehicle.
In this scenario, you must wait until your digital tachograph card arrives before you drive. Simply passing your exams isn’t enough.
