    Frequently Asked Questions

How long will it take to retrain as an HGV driver?

How long it takes to train as an HGV driver depends on the individual learner drivers, but more generally it can depend on:

    •       If you have any HGV driving experience
    •       If you have previously completed any HGV training

If you only need to complete your practical driver training and test, it will only take you around 5 days to graduate. Brand new trainees starting with no experience or prior training can expect to take 4-5 weeks, maybe longer, depending on the individual trainee.

But no matter where you are starting from, the expert driving staff here at HGVTN offer personalised 1:1 support for all trainees, doing everything they can to get trainees into their first job as soon as they can.

To book your HGV training, call or email us today at contact@hgvtrainingnetwork.com. Our friendly advisors can answer any questions you have and get your training journey started.

Do I need to do a medical test to drive an HGV in Weedon?

All learners wishing to train as an HGV driver must complete a medical assessment before they begin formal training – to ensure that all professional drivers are not likely to experience a health-related road traffic accident.

The relaxed medical assessment is carried out by experienced doctors who regularly carry them out and is the first step for any learner unless they have already completed the medical test. This means that if the DVLA doesn’t deem you fit to drive professionally, you won’t have already invested lots of time or money.

Not to worry though, most people pass the medical test without a hitch!

The team at HGVTN will arrange your medical test for you and support you throughout the process – taking something else from your to-do list.

For more information about the medical test, you can call or email us today at contact@hgvtrainingnetwork.com.

What types of training will I need to complete to drive an HGV?

As part of HGV training, you will need to complete three different types of training:

    •       Theory training – similar to car driver theory training, this is super easy with our online complimentary DVSA theory test support software.
    •       Practical training – taking place over 5 consecutive days, generally Monday – Friday and will involve our specialist, expert HGV driving instructors and learner HGVs.
    •       CPC training – your CPC training and exams will be woven through your theory and practical study periods, helping you save time, and are an essential, legal requirement for all professional drivers, no matter the size of your vehicle.

To get your HGV training in Weedon started, reach out to our expert training coordinators today – you can email us at contact@hgvtrainingnetwork.com or fill in our enquiry form and we’ll get back to you as soon as we can.

Can I complete HGV training in Weedon even if I don’t live there?

With over 50 locations across the UK, there will be a local site for pretty much everyone looking to complete HGV or LGV training, no matter where they live.

While most people choose to attend the closest training site to their home, you may be based in a different part of the UK for a while, allowing you to access alternative training locations.

Where you train is completely up to you – just make sure you can commute to the training facility during your week of practical training or you will miss valuable training time.

You can browse our full list of locations here and see which one will work best for you. All you need to do is register for your preferred location and we’ll do the rest.

Which vehicles can I learn to drive with HGV training in Weedon?

Trainees wishing to drive larger vehicles professionally will start by making a choice between three possible licences, which correspond to three different vehicle sizes. This includes:

    •       7.5 Ton Cat C1 licence – the smallest of the possible vehicles, this licence applies to rigid vehicles weighing up to 7.5 tonnes. They are perfect for delivery, ambulance, and horsebox drivers.
    •       Class 2 Cat C licence – this licence applies to vehicles over 7.5 tonnes with rigid bases that do not exceed 32T. Cat C lorries are better suited to larger roads and mean professionals can also drive fire engines and refuse/ recycling trucks.
    •       Class 1 Cat C + E licence –this licence covers the largest vehicles on the roads, up to 44 tonnes with a detachable trailer. HGVs are usually reserved for long-haul routes but can travel all over the world.

For expert help deciding which vehicle licence will be best for you, call or email us today at contact@hgvtrainingnetwork.com. Our advisors will gladly discuss your options and career plans with you to help you make a final decision you’ll be happy with. We also offer additional training options including; ambulance driver training, PCV training, ADR training, CPC training and HIAB training.

Is driving an HGV very difficult?

HGV drivers are incredibly skilled and well trained, ready to handle whatever the open road throws at them and load and unload cargo of all kinds.

But that doesn’t mean actually driving the vehicle will be difficult – a common assumption for new HGV trainees. Making HGV driving a potential career for anyone who already holds a UK driver’s licence.

HGV driver training from HGVTN will give you the confidence and skills you need to handle vehicles that are considerably wider, taller, and longer than anything else on the road as well as some HGV-specific skills related to safe loading and unloading.

For more information about HGV driving in practice, call or fill in our contact form. Our friendly advisors can answer any question you may have and start the process for you at your local training centre.
