What is an ADR driver?
ADR drivers are professionals qualified to drive and deliver dangerous substances and goods.
You must hold an ADR Vocational Training Certificate to drive a goods vehicle carrying regulated hazardous substances.
To obtain an ADR Training Certificate, you must attend our Department of Transport-approved course and pass the relevant SQA Examinations.
What is an ADR license?
An ADR licence or card is an additional driving qualification HGV drivers can acquire if they want to become an ADR driver. This licence permits drivers to transport dangerous goods and hazardous materials across the UK, and potentially beyond!
By earning your ADR card, you can apply for ADR driver jobs throughout Britain. However, you must already hold a valid HGV driving licence and driver CPC (Driver Certificate of Professional Competence) to take part in training that enables you to gain your ADR licence.
How do I get my ADR license?
If you’re already qualified as an HGV driver, but want to add another string to your bow and carry dangerous goods, then you’ll need to complete a Department of Transport-approved ADR training course.
Specialised ADR training courses are designed to equip HGV drivers with an understanding of ADR regulations and essential skills tailored to handling, transporting, and distributing dangerous materials.
To make things easier, we’ve summarised the process into the following steps:
- Book your place on HGV Training Network’s approved ADR driving course
- Pass the relevant SQA Examinations and earn your ADR certificate
- Wait for your new ADR licence to arrive – you must have this to start driving a vehicle carrying dangerous goods legally
After completing your training course with us and passing your tests, you’ll achieve your ADR certificate and licence.
How long does ADR training take to complete?
Want to successfully complete your ADR training course and qualify to transport dangerous goods by road in just five days?
But passing your ADR training may vary depending on factors, such as how fast you naturally learn and the substances you intend to carry.
It’s important to note that once you’ve finished training, this qualification is only valid for five years, meaning you will need to take ADR refresher courses and tests down the line.

What’s the average annual salary of an ADR driver?
After completing your ADR training course, you could earn an average salary of £40k, potentially increasing the more experienced you become.
Understandably, wages are usually subject to location, hours on the road, how dangerous your load is and distances driven.
What skills will I learn by completing the ADR training course?
You’ll learn many abilities that will enable you to become an expert and confident ADR driver.
The skills you’ll learn include:
- Safe handling of dangerous materials
- Awareness on safety procedures
- Knowledge of handling toxic and potentially harmful materials and liquids
Many of these capabilities are transferable and can be applied to other professionals driving.
Where can I carry out my ADR training?

Simply select the area you’d prefer to complete your training at, and we’ll book you in.
Even if you’re relocating soon, you’re sure to find a training centre near you given the number of facilities we have spread across Britain.
Is ADR training expensive?
Our ADR training courses are very affordable, but fees are determined by how fast you learn.
You won’t pay as much if you require less tuition i.e. if you’re a fast learner or have experience driving large vehicles beforehand.
However, if you’re a beginner with no previous training, you’ll need more tuition.
