    Frequently Asked Questions

How long will HGV driver training take?

HGV driver training duration will generally depend on the individual learner, their level of driving experience and if they have already completed any HGV training in the past.

If you are a driver who only needs to complete their practical driver training and test – you can expect to graduate after training for 5 consecutive days, usually Monday – Friday, following your test on the Friday afternoon.

If you are a trainee with no prior experience or training, the process will be a little longer for you and can last around 4-10 weeks, depending on the individual trainee and how focussed you can be during your training.

No matter where you are starting from though, the experienced driving staff here at HGVTN offer personalised 1:1 support for all trainees, doing everything they can to get you into your first driving job safe and sound as soon as they can.

To book your HGV training, call or email us today at contact@hgvtrainingnetwork.com. Our friendly advisors can answer any questions and start your training journey.

Do I need to do a medical test to drive an HGV in Loughborough?

All learners wishing to train as an HGV driver must complete a medical assessment before they begin formal training – this helps ensure HGV drivers are not likely to experience a health-related road traffic accident while working and those travelling alongside such large vehicles will remain safe too.

The medical assessment is nothing to be worried about and is relaxed and informal, carried out by experienced doctors who regularly carry them out and fill in the relevant paperwork.

The doctor will look at your general health, any medications you take, as well as your hearing and eyesight, to ensure you are fit to drive.

Your assigned team member at HGVTN will arrange your medical test for you, giving you all the appointment details in good time – letting you focus on your training.

For more information about the medical or other tests, you can call us or fill in our contact form and we’ll get back to you as soon as we can.

What types of training will I need to complete to drive an HGV?

HGV driver training is made up of three different types of training:

    •       Theory training

As with car driver theory training, HGV theory training is essential and is made much simpler and easier with our online complimentary DVSA theory test support software.

    •       Practical training

Practical training with HGVTN takes place over 5 consecutive days, generally Monday – Friday and will be led by our specialist, expert HGV driving instructors in our swish learner HGVs.

    •       CPC training

A Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) is a legal requirement for all professional drivers, and the CPC training and exams will be interwoven through your theory and practical study periods, helping save time and get you on the road as soon as we can.

How old do I have to be to drive an HGV in the UK?

In England, the minimum age for undergoing HGV driver training and obtaining a Category C (rigid) licence is usually 18 years old.

For a Category C+E (articulated) licence, the minimum age is usually 21 years old, according to government guidance.

To train to drive such large vehicles you will also need to:

    •       Have a valid Cat B car driver’s licence and a provisional HGV licence – essentials that must be in place before starting your HGV training course.
    •       Be medically fit to drive – which is assessed as you begin your training.

There are some exceptions to these rules, however, so be sure to reach out if you think they could apply to you.

To discuss this, or anything else that is on your mind, you can call us or fill in our contact form – our friendly, local advisors can answer any questions you may have, including starting requirements and help you with the application processes if need be.

What else can I do once I gain my HGV licence?
