Frequently Asked Questions
What are classed as ‘dangerous goods’ in ADR driving?
ADR drivers are tasked with transporting goods that are recognised as posing a greater risk than those transported in standard HGV driving. This is why a specific qualification is a legal requirement to move these goods from A to B safely.
Some of the goods you may transport when working as an ADR driver include, but aren’t limited to:
- Flammable liquids
- Toxic gases
- Infectious substances
- Explosive materials
- Corrosive elements
These items are essential in many industries across the UK and globally, but require a careful hand.
With HGVTN, you’ll learn all the necessary knowledge letting you drive these goods with confidence while adhering to all recommended safety precautions.
Do I need to do my ADR Training in Bristol?
Not necessarily. If you’re local to the Bristol area, our specialist training centre in Bristol is likely your ideal location.
But if you live a little further away, or anywhere else in the country for that matter, we have up to 50 fully-approved training centres for you to choose from. So you can earn the ADR certificate in a place that’s closest to home or whatever is the most convenient for your needs.
You can take a look at our full list of training centres here. Or get in touch with the HGVTN team if you require any further info.
How long will ADR training in Bristol last?
Various factors determine how long you’ll spend in ADR training with HGVTN.
For example, if you’ve already undergone some ADR training in the past, you’ll likely pass much faster than someone who has never taken the course before.
Plus, if you’re already an experienced HGV driver, you’re already equipped with many of the skills you’ll need.
Once you earn your ADR certificate, though, you won’t need to have any more training aside from a quick refresher course every five years, making this one of the more hassle-free driving qualifications out there!

I’ve already completed an ADR course before - can I take a refresher course with HGVTN?
Of course. Refresher training in the driving sector is very common, with many drivers wanting to ensure their skills and knowledge are still up to scratch if they’ve been out of the business for a while.
If you fall into this category, feel free to discuss this with a member of the team. They’ll walk you through your recommended training and anything they feel will be of benefit to you.
The best part is that you likely won’t need to undertake any excessive training, especially compared to a newcomer, helping you get back on the road much faster.
Is there a difference between an HGV driver and an ADR driver?
While the roles are very similar in some ways, there are significant differences between HGV driving and ADR driving that make them distinctly separate professions.
HGV drivers, for instance, can transport a whole plethora of goods, without any specific industry or usage in mind.
ADR drivers, on the other hand, are tasked with transporting particularly dangerous goods, as mentioned in the previous point. Because of this, the government required drivers to undertake special ADR training.
This is not only to ensure the safety of the driver but also the wider safety of other road users.
Are there any driving limits for ADR drivers?
Yes. Much like other forms of driving, ADR drivers must adhere to specific rules with regard to time spent on the road and time at rest, to keep themselves and other drivers safe.
These rules specify:
- Drivers must not exceed more than 10 hours of driving per day
- Driver must not be on duty for more than 11 hours per day
- Drivers must not exceed 56 hours of driving per week
