How long will it take to retrain as an HGV driver?

Depending on how much experience you have and where you are up to in your training journey, the exact amount of time it will take you to retrain will vary from person to person.

For trainees who only need to complete their practical training and tests, it could take as little as 5 days to begin their new career. For others, including those starting afresh, it could take around a month.

It all depends on how much experience you currently have.

Here at HGVTN, we have experience working with trainee drivers of all types, so we can offer the support and expertise you need to help you pass the first time and get out on the open road.

How much does HGV training in Bridgend cost?

As each service from the HGV Training Network is completely bespoke, you will need to provide more information before we can give you a quote for HGV or LGV driver training in Bridgend.

    The reasons for this are:

    1.     Every learner has a range of previous driving qualifications
    2.     Every learner will have different experience levels

We, therefore, can’t give a generalised price breakdown, as these factors mean that one training program can be completely different from the training program of another.

What else can I do once I complete HGV training in Bridgend?

While the vast majority of our learners go on to find careers driving LGVs or HGVs, not everyone opts for this as their final career.

Your HGV license allows you to explore a range of possible careers, including driving:

    •       Ambulances and fire engines
    •       Horseboxes
    •       Refuse or recycling lorries

Many of these driving jobs can be with private companies, or with national infrastructure like the NHS or Fire Service, which gives a wide range of benefits for our learners to contemplate.

Within LGV and HGV driving, there are also a range of options for career progression, including becoming a dangerous goods (ADR) vehicle driver. Within this position, you will be qualified to drive goods that may be flammable, toxic, or radioactive. This requires additional ADR training

To see where HGV driving could take you, reach out to our friendly team today. You can email us today at contact@hgvtrainingnetwork.com or fill in our enquiry form with your main questions and we’ll get back to you as soon as we can.

Which vehicles can I learn to drive with HGV training in Bridgend?

With HGV training in Bridgend, you have a choice of three sizes of vehicles and three corresponding licenses. These include:

    •       7.5 Ton Cat C1 licence – for rigid vehicles weighing up to 7.5 tonnes, sometimes referred to as final mile lorries. Also ideal for ambulances and horsebox drivers.
    •       Class 2 Cat C licence – for vehicles over 7.5 tonnes with rigid bases that do not exceed 32T. These lorries are best for driving in cities and towns and will qualify those looking to drive fire engines or bin lorries.
    •       Class 1 Cat C + E licence – for those wishing to drive the largest vehicles on the road, this licence covers all vehicles up to 44 tonnes with a detachable trailer. The HGVs are usually used for longer haul,  motorway routes.

For more information about which vehicle training is best for you, simply call or email us today at contact@hgvtrainingnetwork.com. Our friendly advisors will gladly discuss your options and career plans to help you make a final decision.

Do I need to do a medical test to drive an HGV in Bridgend?

All learners wishing to train as an HGV driver must complete a medical assessment before they begin formal training.

This is also the case for all professional drivers and ensures they are healthy enough to complete long journeys in heavy goods vehicles, without posing a risk to themselves or others – limiting the chance of a health-related road traffic accident.

A medical assessment is the first step for any learner (unless they have already completed the medical test) so if the DVLA doesn’t deem you fit to drive professionally, you won’t have already invested time or money into the necessary training.

The team at HGVTN will arrange your medical test and support you throughout the process, including finding a doctor who can complete the test and paperwork – leaving you with fewer worries.

For more information about the medical test, you can call or email us today at contact@hgvtrainingnetwork.com.
