    Frequently Asked Questions

Is there career progression for an HGV driver?

If HGV driver training in Devon seems like a good fit for you but you are eager to progress in your new career, there are actually many future driving-related careers you could choose from!

If you want to share your industry knowledge with others, you could teach HGV driving or conduct HGV driving tests by becoming a qualified DVSA examiner.

For those who want to stay on the road, you can retrain and drive:

    • Horseboxes
    • Refuse or recycling lorries
    • Ambulances and fire engines
    • HIABs – lorry-mounted crane or lorry loader
    • PCVs – Passenger Carrying Vehicles, such as coaches or buses
    • ADR lorries – that carry dangerous goods

To get started, however, you’ll need to gain your HGV licence!

To book your HGV training, call or email us today at contact@hgvtrainingnetwork.com – our helpful advisors can answer any questions you may have and book your training when you are ready.

Is the HGV medical test hard to pass?

To train as an HGV driver, you must complete a medical assessment before you begin formal training – this saves wasted time and vastly reduces the chances of a health-related road traffic accident while you are out trucking.

It’s nothing to worry about, though, as the medical assessment is relaxed and informal, carried out by experienced doctors, and doesn’t discriminate against health conditions unless they pose a serious risk.

This means that most people pass the medical test without an issue and those that fail probably shouldn’t be on the road anyway!

For more information about the medical tests or the theory, practical, or CPC tests,  fill in our enquiry form or email us at contact@hgvtrainingnetwork.com and we’ll get back to you ASAP.

Can I start HGV training in Devon?

    • Celebrated your 18th birthday – whether you went out and partied or stayed in with a takeaway

Everything else we can either support you with or take care of for you!

Can I finish HGV driver training with HGVTN?

HGVTN can help all types of prospective HGV drivers – those looking to get into logistics for the first time or even those who may be part-way through their studies.

When you call to speak to the team or book training, we will find out if you have any previous driving experience and see where you want to go in future – which will tell us which training you need.

We can then help with any paperwork, medicals, or theory, practical, or CPC tests to help you pass in good time.

As all support is bespoke, our team is well used to working with learners at every stage of the HGV process. This means we can also help if you started training previously and your licence or tests have lapsed in the meantime.

To see how soon your HGV training in Devon can begin, email us at contact@hgvtrainingnetwork.com or fill in our enquiry form and we’ll get back to you.

Does HGV training in Devon cover all lorry types?

Simply put, yes – but if you want to drive the largest vehicles on the road professionally, you’ll need to choose the vehicle you like most first as there are three possible licences to choose from.

     The three possible licences include:

    • 7.5 Ton Cat C1 licence

The smallest of the vehicles, this is suitable for rigid vehicles weighing between 3.5 tonnes to 7.5 tonnes. This covers delivery and removal vehicles, ambulances, and smaller horseboxes.

    • Class 2 Cat C licence

This licence applies to vehicles over 7.5 tonnes with rigid bases that do not exceed 32 tonnes.  Cat C licences also allow you to drive fire engines, tractors with long trailers, refuse or recycling trucks and anything included on the smaller Cat C1 vehicles.

    • Class 1 Cat C + E licence

You’ll need this licence to drive the largest, heaviest vehicles on UK roads – those up to 44 tonnes with a detachable trailer. This includes articulated HGVs as well as drawbar vehicles and anything from the smaller 7.5 Ton Cat C1 licence and the Class 2 Cat C licence.

To decide which licence is right for you, explore our blog ‘What HGV licence do I need first?’ or call us.  Our advisors are free to discuss your options with you and help you decide what is best for you.

Can I go from driving a car to driving an articulated lorry in one step?

In previous years, if you had a car (Cat B) licence and wanted to drive a Class 1 Cat C+E articulated lorry, you would first need to train on a 7.5 Ton Cat C1 licence and then retrain.

However, as of 15th November 2021, you can bypass that test and go straight for the larger licence – helping get you into HGV jobs faster!

To get started, you can call us for a chat or fill in our enquiry form – you’ll be out on the road in no time!
