    Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get free HGV training?

You may have heard whispers of free training opportunities across the UK.

While these exist, there are several barriers to accessing these free courses, including:

    •       A small number of training places
    •       Limited providers
    •       Varied eligibility criteria
    •       Long application procedures
    •       Oversubscription to opportunities

For those that are not eligible for free HGV driver training, you may think you are out of options.

However, as the only provider of HGV driver finance, HGVTN is proud to welcome learners, no matter their age or background, to our courses and help change what their future looks like.

In as little as 5 weeks you could be waving goodbye to your disheartening 9-5 and embracing the freedoms of HGV driving.

For more information on how we can help, browse our Snap finance options or give us a call for a no-obligation conversation with our friendly team.

How long will retraining as an HGV driver take me?

HGV driver training generally depends on the individual learner drivers but can also depend on how much HGV driving experience you have and if you have already completed some form of HGV training.

Amazingly, if you started training before and just need to complete your practical driver training and test, you can expect to graduate in just 5 days.

Trainees with no prior experience or training can expect the entire process to last around 4-5 weeks – though this will still differ depending on the learner and how much time they have to devote to training.

HGVTN offer personalised 1:1 support for all trainees, doing everything we can, from filling out paperwork and booking tests on your behalf so you can get your first driving job without unnecessary delay.

To book your HGV training, call or email us today at contact@hgvtrainingnetwork.com. Our friendly advisors can answer any questions and start your training journey as soon as you are ready.

What types of training will I need to complete to drive an HGV?

HGV driver training is made up of three different types of training and tests, all of which are set by the DVSA. This applies to all licence categories and includes:

    •       Theory training

Just like when you completed your car driver theory training, HGV theory training can be made simpler and easier using our online complimentary DVSA theory test support software – included for all learners who need it.

    •       Practical training

Practical training takes place over 5 consecutive days, generally Monday – Friday, and will be led by our specialist, expert HGV driving instructors in our learner heavy goods vehicles – which could be your first introduction to articulated lorries!

    •       CPC training

A Driver Certificate of Professional Competence is an essential, legal requirement for all professional drivers – no matter what they drive.

Your CPC training and exams will be interwoven through your theory and practical study periods, helping you train and pass more efficiently.

Is HGV driving in Purfleet worth changing jobs for?

Benefits include unrivalled independence, the freedom to fit work around your home life, and the liberation from monotonous days that are always the same.

Simply put, HGV driving can change your life as you know it.

Which vehicles can I learn to drive with HGV training in Purfleet?

Trainees wishing to drive larger vehicles for a living will have to choose between three possible licences, which correspond to different vehicle weights. These include:

    •       The 7.5 Ton Cat C1 licence

As the smallest of the vehicles you can learn to drive with HGVTN, this licence applies to rigid vehicles weighing between 3.5 tonnes to 7.5 tonnes.

They are perfect for delivery and removal vehicles, ambulances, and smaller horseboxes.

    •       Class 2 Cat C licence

This licence applies to vehicles over 7.5 tonnes with rigid bases that don’t exceed 32 tonnes.

Cat C lorries mean professionals can also drive fire engines, tractors with long trailers, refuse or recycling trucks and anything on the Cat C1 vehicles.

    •       Class 1 Cat C + E licence

This licence covers the largest, heaviest vehicles on UK roads, up to 44 tonnes with a detachable trailer.

Articulated or drawbar HGVs are usually reserved for long-haul routes and give drivers the ability to control anything from the 7.5 Ton Cat C1 licence and the Class 2 Cat C licence.

For help deciding which vehicle licence will be best for you, you can read our blog ‘What HGV licence do I need first?’ or call us – our advisors will gladly discuss your options and career plans with you to help you make a final decision.

What else can I do once I complete HGV training in Purfleet?

Although many of our graduates go on to drive HGVs across the UK, Europe, and the wider world for decades to come, some opt for a change and go on to explore alternative driving careers. These can include:

    Carrying passengers

    •       PCVs – Passenger Carrying Vehicles, such as buses or coaches *
    •       Ambulances and fire engines
    •       Horseboxes of all sizes

These options allow you to continue to carry goods, with enhanced accountability.

*Stars mark career options that require further certification.
