    Frequently Asked Questions

    What is a PCV driver?

A PCV driver is a professional who drives a Passenger Carrying Vehicle. Because these vehicles can have 16 seats or more, they are much larger than a domestic car, leading to drivers needing specific training.

This includes a minibus, bus, or coach. From carrying school children on trips to transporting large groups within taxi companies – PCV drivers have a wide and varied range of potential driving jobs to consider.

If this sounds like your ideal future job and you need PCV training in Manchester,  fill in our enquiry form or email us at contact@hgvtrainingnetwork.com and we’ll get back to you!

How do you pay monthly for PCV training?

Just like you can pay for things like phones, cars, or even clothes over a series of months, paying for ADR training via financing generally occurs via direct debit, for a set amount each month.

This continues over a selected number of months until the total cost is paid, usually plus a fee for paying with credit – referred to as APR.

Using Snap Finance to pay for PCV training Manchester-wide can really help prospective learners, as it removes some of the financial insecurity and means that people who want to be professional drivers don’t have to save up a lump sum or use their savings.

To see if you are eligible for finance, use the loan calculator here. Alternatively, if you want to book PCV training or ask a question, email us today at contact@hgvtrainingnetwork.com and our knowledgeable team will help you in any way they can.

I’ve already completed some PCV training, can I pick back up where I left off?

It’s not uncommon for the professionals at HGVTN to see drivers who have stopped or paused their training for one reason or another.

So, if you need to finish or even restart your training from the beginning, we can make that happen.

You just need to let us know when you contact or call us.  Our advisors will ask you some questions to find out how much training you’ve already completed and when it was, before creating a bespoke package just for you.

If you want to make a start, just get in touch today!

How long will PCV training in Manchester take?

Unlike other courses which have a minimum duration, PCV training durations will depend on how experienced you are, what driving qualifications you already have, and your confidence levels. As such, it can take anywhere from a fortnight to a few months and differs between learners.

Once complete, your PCV training will last for as long as you are a driver – as long as you complete the 5-year interim training – to keep your skills and industry knowledge fresh.

This is also available at HGVTN and to book initial or interim PCV training in Manchester, call us or fill in our enquiry form and we’ll get back to you.

Is there a difference in the PCV licences?

While you might assume that there is a single qualification you need to drive the range of PCVs, what licence you need actually depends on the size of the vehicle you want to drive.

    For example:

    • Cat D1 licence – for minibuses up to 16 seats
    • Cat D1+E – for a minibus with a trailer attached (as long as the total weight doesn’t exceed 12,000kg)
    • Cat D+E – for a minibus or a coach with a 750kg trailer attached

So, to get started, have a think about what vehicle you would rather drive and then call us or fill out our enquiry form to get a bespoke start date!

    Can PCV drivers work abroad?

Dreaming about living and working in another country? With more hours of sunshine, warmer weather, and a change of pace, we don’t blame you.

Luckily, while you will need to check for your chosen ex-pat location (use this .gov site), UK driving qualifications are generally valid in:

    • EU and EEA countries – including Switzerland
    • Canada
    • Australia
    • New Zealand
    • Japan
    • Finland, Hong Kong, and Sweden
    • Russia
