Why do I need Driver CPC Training?
The Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (Driver CPC) is a legally required qualification for professional drivers of a bus, coach, or lorries.
According to an EU directive, driver CPC must be held alongside their other driver qualifications, such as a PCV licence or HGV licence.
If you drive a lorry over 3.5 tonnes or minibuses with 9 seats or more, you must complete driver CPC training both when you embark on your career and every 5 years thereafter, as well as gaining your vehicle driving licence.
Initial CPC
When you pass your HGV driving test, you’ll need to do an initial CPC. This is broken up into 2 modules:
Module 2 – Case Study Test
This test covers a range of real-life driver scenarios that you might encounter when on the road in the future. It’s made up of 7 case studies that have 6-8 multiple-choice questions in each, giving a possible total score of 50 – you need at least 40 correct answers to pass.
You can use our CPC theory training software to practice before you take the test.
Module 4 – Practical Demonstration Test
Once you have passed your part 2 driver CPC, you can now take your part 4 test.
This test is about what a driver does whilst not driving, to prove you can handle the vehicle safely and understand your responsibilities as a professional HGV driver. No actual driving is required, but you’ll show your answers practically in a real vehicle on a range of topics from the Driver CPC syllabus – scoring a maximum of 20 points for each.
To pass you need to score at least 15/20 in each topic, with a total score totalling 80/100 – the minimum score to pass.
Drivers will then be issued a Driver Qualification Card (DQC), a kind of driver certificate, which is valid for 5 years. Within that 5 years and every 5 years thereafter, drivers will be subject to Driver CPC periodic training.
Periodic CPC
No matter when you completed your last training courses, all drivers need to complete 35 hours of so-called periodic training every 5 years to maintain their CPC licence, after their initial CPC expires. This is done through a relaxed online classroom-style driver CPC course.
These 35 hours are generally split into 5 separate days, lasting 7 hours each – so around an average working day. But don’t worry, there is no pass or fail element to the courses, all you need to do is show up.
Each new five-year period will begin from the expiry date of the driver’s current CPC qualification, not from the date which they reached the fulfilment of 35 hours of driver CPC training.
Transport Manager CPC
This is a legal requirement of the operator licensing system for both standard, national, and international licences.
If you run a business with more than 1 Cat C or Cat D vehicle, someone within your business must undertake this driver CPC training. It’s suitable for drivers looking to enter Road Haulage Transport Management, with vans or HGVs.
To pass Transport Manager CPC training courses, applicants need to have a broad understanding of everything from the civil, commercial, social, and fiscal laws on road haulage and the paperwork needed to take goods out of the UK – among other topics.

Frequently Asked Questions about driver CPC qualifications
Can you study for a driver CPC with classroom training?
There are a range of providers who offer both in-class and online driver CPC, so aspiring learners can choose which CPC training is best for them.
Those who choose classroom training may have more time and study best in person, but those who prefer an online driver CPC course can be more time-poor and need to achieve their driver qualification card in between their busy lifestyle.
Is a bus and lorry driver CPC the same?
Put most simply, yes.
The driver CPC courses and qualifications are suitable for professional drivers of all types, including those who have a driver qualification card for buses, coaches, or lorries.
Do I need a driver CPC if I want to drive HGVs for a living?
Yes. Along with your HGV licence, you’ll need to complete your CPC as it is a legal requirement. If you don’t have a CPC, you’re unable to legally drive for a living. But don’t worry, your CPC training is included in our HGV training. Or, if you’re refreshing your CPC, we can provide this separately for you.

How will I get my Driver Qualification Card?
