It can be difficult to define how long it takes to retrain as an HGV or LGV driver because it really depends on how much experience you have and where you are up to in your training journey. The exact amount of time will vary from person to person.

For trainees who only need to complete their practical training and tests, it could take just 5 days to start their new career as an HGV driver. Trainees starting afresh should expect to spend around a month retraining – which compared to other professions is still incredibly quick!

While the vast majority of our learners go on to enjoy long, fulfilling careers driving LGVs or HGVs, not everyone opts for this as their final career.

•       PCVs – Passenger Carrying Vehicles, such as coaches or buses

Many of these driving jobs can be with private companies, or with national infrastructure like the NHS or Fire Service and come with a wide range of benefits for drivers – alongside a great salary.

Within LGV and HGV driving, there is also a range of options for career progression, including larger vehicles or becoming a dangerous goods (ADR) vehicle driver. When in this position, you will be qualified to drive goods that may be flammable, toxic, or radioactive – making it a potentially very exciting career.

With HGV training in Liverpool, you have a choice of three sizes of vehicles and three corresponding licenses. These include:

•       7.5 Ton Cat C1 licence – for rigid vehicles weighing up to 7.5 tonnes, sometimes referred to as final mile lorries. Also ideal for ambulances and horsebox drivers.
•       Class 2 Cat C licence – for vehicles over 7.5 tonnes with rigid bases that do not exceed 32T. These lorries are best for driving in cities and towns and will qualify those looking to drive fire engines or bin lorries.
•       Class 1 Cat C + E licence – for those wishing to drive the largest vehicles on the road, this licence covers all vehicles up to 44 tonnes with a detachable trailer. The HGVs are usually used for longer haul, motorway routes.

Due to their sheer size and the intimidation factor that comes from HGV, many people assume they will be very tricky to drive.

But that’s why we’re here. Our HGV driver training equips you with the confidence and skills needed to handle articulated vehicles that are considerably wider, taller and longer than domestic vehicles – so once you have that down, (and some HGV-specific skills related to loading and unloading) you’ll be good to go.

If they were more difficult to handle, your practical training would take much longer than 5 days to complete – so try not to be overwhelmed before you get behind the wheel.
