Transporting dangerous goods across the country is the ideal HGV career for those wishing to push their driving skills to the limit and earn attractive salaries. But you’ll need a specific additional ADR qualification under your belt to enter this specialist field.

To build on your HGV licence, you must earn your ADR Training Certificate by completing the ADR test – which we’ll explore within this blog!

So, what is the ADR exam, and how difficult is it? Keep reading to find out what our experts have to say!

What is the ADR test like? - HGV Training Network

What is the ADR exam?

The only thing standing between you and becoming a more specialist driver earning some of the industry’s highest salaries is the ADR test. This exam is intended to test your knowledge of ADR safety regulations and determine if you are ready to carry hazardous materials safely.

Just like a standard driving test, this examination helps to keep you and other road users from harm by ensuring that you know exactly how to handle this type of HGV correctly.

Additionally, it’s also designed to assess your vehicle, and whether it meets the industry standard for carrying dangerous substances in bulk by road.

Your official test is completed on the last day of your ADR training – and unsurprisingly, you must pass it to gain this additional qualification.

How hard is the ADR test?

Many consider the ADR test much simpler, given its multiple-choice format. However, you shouldn’t assume you’re more likely to pass just because of this.

As mentioned earlier, the purpose of the ADR examination is to assess your suitability to transport dangerous materials by road safely and assess any risks you could face, so it only makes sense that it challenges you to some degree.

Like any other test or examination, there’s a greater chance that you’ll breeze through the ADR exam the first time if you’re tutored well and revise, revise, and revise! Our Department of Transport-approved course will offer specialised training and equip you with the knowledge to pass your ADR examination with flying colours.

How is the ADR test formatted?

The ADR exam consists of multiple-choice questions throughout, testing your understanding of dangerous goods and ADR regulations. Per each question, you’ll have to choose between options A, B, C, or D, for which there is only one correct answer.

A fantastic advantage of the multiple-choice format is that you don’t have to worry about articulating your own written response, which is music to many ears!

How many questions are on the ADR test?

To earn your ADR Vocational Training Certificate, which permits you to transport dangerous goods in an HGV, you’ll need to answer 120 questions, split into the following sections:

  • The core section of your exam will consist of 25 questions, and the minimum pass rate is 18/20.
  • The Tanks module is made up of 20 questions, with a minimum pass threshold of 14.
  • Packages – this section includes 15 questions, and you’ll need to answer 11+/15 correctly.
  • Classes 2, 3, 6, and 8 consist of 36 questions, with the pass mark sitting at 25/36.
  • Classes 4, 5, and 9 contain 24 questions, with a minimum passing score of 17/24.

Contact the HGV Training Network today for a bespoke, free no-obligation quote!

Can you do an ADR mock test?

We highly recommend completing several mock ADR exams to prepare you for the real deal. Mock tests should consist of multiple-choice questions similar to those you can expect in your real examination.

They’ll include exam questions testing your knowledge of corrosive materials, dangerous goods, and safety regulations, plus much more! You’ll be provided with study material and will attend 4 days of classroom training taking your exams on the 5th day.

Can you do the ADR test online?

Your 5-day ADR course will conclude with the official DVLA ADR examination, which you’ll complete in person either online or on paper at your training centre. You’ll need to bring your driving licence with you to take the exam!

Candidates who pass will receive their official ADR driver card shortly afterwards in the post, which is required before you can start carrying dangerous materials on UK roads.

For more information, you can visit the official gov.uk page for becoming a dangerous goods driver.

What happens if I fail my examination?

If you fail your ADR test, there’s no need to panic! You can retake the test module/modules you didn’t pass as many times as needed. What’s more, if you do this within the first 16 weeks after failing your first test, you won’t need to redo your ADR training.

Any test completed online can be retaken the same day if there is an available slot – which is great news if you want to get it over and done with as quickly as possible.

If you’d rather take more time to practice more mock ADR examinations, that’s fine, too!

HGV vs LGV training - HGV Training Network
    blog, HGV News

Becoming an LGV or HGV driver can be such a rewarding experience. Truck drivers get to ditch the standard 9 to 5 for a job that takes them out on the open road, gives them their independence back, and lets them earn a very impressive wage, all at the same time.

Not to mention becoming a valued worker with in-demand skills and experience – what’s not to like?

But if you’ve been seeking training to drive HGVs or LGVs you may have become a little confused about a certain detail… what’s the difference between HGV training and LGV training?

They’re both terms that get thrown around a lot, so it would help if you have the clearest picture possible about each of them, before deciding to dive into driver training.

At HGV Training Network, we’re home to over 50 centres for driver training, scattered across the country, so we like to think we know a thing or two about HGVs and LGVs! With this in mind, here are some of the answers you may be looking for…

HGV vs LGV training - HGV Training Network

Is there a difference between HGV and LGV?

In short, no! ‘HGV’ and ‘LGV’ are interchangeable terms used to describe larger, heavier commercial carrier vehicles that transport goods from A to B. Back in the day (pre-1990s) HGVs and LGVs were indeed different vehicles, with the terms used to describe large vehicles of certain weights.

An HGV (Heavy Goods Vehicle) was recognised as anything that had a gross vehicle weight of 3,500kg, while an LGV (back then known as Light Goods Vehicles, now known as Large Goods Vehicles) was any large transport vehicle below this figure, to a certain size.

In 1992, the UK merged its driving licence standards with those of the EU, meaning the rules suddenly changed. Under this new guidance, in essence, there was no longer a difference between HGVs and LGVs. It’s a little confusing, especially for drivers who were around during this time and who are still driving today.

But the point is that, from a legal standard, HGVs and LGVs now mean the same thing. And if you think about it, it actually gives you less to worry about, once you’re in the know!

*Did you know – HGVTN has over 300 5-star reviews on Google from satisfied learners, who’ve since gone on to become fully-licenced HGV drivers?

Are HGV training and LGV training different?

As you may have gathered from the previous section, because HGVs and LGVs are now classed as the same vehicle, there’s no difference in training for said vehicles. Whether you refer to it as an HGV or an LGV, you’ll still be learning to drive larger transport vehicles and will exit your training with all the same qualifications and excellent career prospects.

So, when you’re on the hunt for driving jobs after you’ve completed your training and earned your HGV licence (or LGV licence, if this is the language you prefer) be sure to look into both HGV driver jobs and LGV driver jobs – you’ll be able to apply for both!

Plus, if you’re interested in reaching even further afield and developing your driving skills even further, HGV Training Network also offers driver training for a host of other vehicle types. Be sure to check them all out on our website here.

What is the difference between an HGV licence and an LGV lorry licence?

You’ve probably guessed the answer to this by now, right? When the licence rules changed back in the 1990s, so did the technicalities involved in these licences.

The main thing you need to know is that, technically, there is no difference between an HGV licence and an LGV licence – they both mean the same thing. You will, however, have the option to earn licences that allow you to drive large vehicles belonging to different categories.

These licences used to be broken down into ‘Classes’ – primarily Class 1 and Class 2. However, under the current language, the HGV Class 1 is now known as the Category C+E licence, while Class 2 is simply known as Category C.

    • The Category C licence lets you drive commercial trucks over 7.5 tonnes and up to 32 tonnes (think of this as the standard HGV licence).
    • The Category C+E licence lets you drive a large rigid vehicle that is articulated and bends in the middle – these require slightly more in-depth training.

Are HGVs automatic? - HGV Training Network
      blog, HGV News

One of the most common questions among those looking to enter the fulfilling world of HGV driving is whether HGVs are automatic or not. So, we thought it would be useful to explore this!

Within this piece, our HGV training experts explain whether the HGVs you can expect to drive have automatic transmissions and how automatic HGVs compare to their manual counterparts.

      What is an automatic HGV?

HGVs have a transmission, also known as a gearbox, that’s required to take power from the engine to make its wheels move. Just like in your domestic car, HGVs with a manual transmission, the gear shifts needed to move the HGV at various speeds are controlled by the driver using a clutch and gearstick.

But, with automatic vehicles, gear changes are completed automatically without any input from the HGV driver, hence the name ‘automatic HGV’.

As such, automatic HGVs don’t feature a clutch – all the operator has to do to move this type of HGV is select D (drive) on the shifter stick, accelerate, and brake while the automatic transmission fluid conducts the gear change independently.

*Did You Know? Through our recruitment partnership with Blue Arrow, HGV Training Network can help you find your first job after completing your HGV training!

Benefits of driving an automatic HGV

HGV drivers who operate automatic lorries experience a whole host of advantages, such as:

      They’re excellent in stop-and-start traffic

A significant selling point of automatic HGVs is how simple, smooth, and efficient they are to operate during congested or rush hour traffic.

In any manual vehicle, pressing the clutch repeatedly to shift up and down gears during slow-moving traffic can be tedious work and require quite a lot of focus.

However, this isn’t an issue with an automatic HGV, as they don’t feature a clutch or require manual clutch control to accelerate and stop – perfect for use in slow-moving traffic.

      They’re easier to manoeuvre

Trucks have a much more complex gear system than cars as they’re much bigger and require more power to move – some large vehicles can have up to 16 gears and may operate using splitter or range change gearboxes!

But, with an automatic HGV, the stress of gear changes, splitting gears or flipping between each is removed, as the transmission does all the hard work for you!

      They’re safer

Following on from above, as the HGV driver doesn’t have to use a gear stick, they can keep both hands on the steering wheel, providing greater and steadier control over the vehicle.

Plus, as there’s less to think about, you’ll feel much more focused and calm on the road and can dedicate all your attention to navigating your surroundings, avoiding potential hazards and accidents.

Are HGVs automatic? - HGV Training Network

      Advantages of a manual HGV

Manual HGV driving is still utilised amongst some companies and comes with a host of benefits:

You can drive both manual and automatic HGVs

With a manual HGV licence, you can drive both types of vehicles, meaning you can also work for companies that still use manual trucks.

It also saves you the hassle of having to sift through job descriptions to check whether your licence applies to a particular job.

You gain the full truck driving experience

For many professional drivers, especially veterans in the industry, manually shifting gears and feeling the control you have over your lorry is a great feeling and is part of the whole trucker experience – something that is lacking with automatic transmissions.

They require less maintenance than automatic HGVs

Due to their less complex transmission instruments, manuals are considered to be more reliable and easier to maintain. As a result, you could spend more time on the job and less time with the RAC!

However, it’s important to note that this depends on the make and model of the HGV and that many automatic HGVs have become a lot more durable in recent years!

      Comparing automatic and manual HGVs

Now that we’ve explored the two types of HGV transmissions, it’s time to see how they compare head-to-head.

Overall, automatic HGVs can be considered a safer choice than manuals for truckers, as their attention isn’t divided between the gearbox and the road ahead.

What’s more, they’re typically more comfortable to drive, as automatic HGV drivers don’t experience the leg ache associated with clutch control.

Plus, if manually shifting gears and experiencing ‘true driving’ isn’t something you really care for, you won’t lose much by operating automatic HGVs.

However, opportunities in the industry may be reduced for automatic-only HGV drivers when it comes to agency work, as they have to be able to drive whatever vehicle they’re given, including manuals. But there are still plenty of other roles to consider due to the ongoing driver shortage, so this may not be an issue for you.

Are HGVs automatic? - HGV Training Network

Are HGVs automatic in the industry?

The majority of companies in the haulage and logistics industry are now operating automatic lorries instead of manuals because of the benefits explained above. Many businesses strive to make working life on the road as easy and safe as possible for their drivers, which is generally more achievable with automatic lorries over manuals.

Plus, with more focus on their driving, HGV operators are less likely to crash and damage company vehicles, saving logistic businesses their reputations and money in repairs and replacement HGVs.

Are HGVs automatic at UK driver training centres?

If many companies across the haulage industry tend to use automatic HGVs, do training providers use automatics too?

Put simply, the answer differs between UK training providers, although most lean towards using automatics.

HGV driver training courses utilise automatic HGVs as they’re much easier to learn in – students can focus more on manoeuvring a larger vehicle, becoming aware of blind spots and the rules of the road for HGV drivers.

While other HGV training centres may teach trainee HGV drivers in a manual truck so they understand the mechanics of HGV gearboxes – it really just depends.

Can I drive a manual HGV if I pass in an automatic?

Wondering if you can drive a manual heavy goods vehicle with an automatic HGV licence?

Gov.UK states that the current situation is as follows: ‘where a driver holds a car driving licence, and then takes his lorry or bus test on an automatic vehicle, his driving licence will restrict him to only being able to drive large automatic vehicles.’

This also applies if you have a standard manual car or bus licence.

PAYE vs Self Employed HGV Driving - HGV Training Network
        blog, HGV News

Nowadays it seems that you can earn a living in almost any way you can think of.

From new career paths online to being self-employed, flexibility is the name of the game.

But, if a vocation driving HGVs has captured your interest, you may well be wondering if it’s best to join a driving fleet as an employee or embrace the freedom and work for yourself.

So, what do you need to know about PAYE vs self-employed HGV driving to help you make a decision?

What is the difference between PAYE vs self-employed HGV driving?

It used to be the case that many more HGV drivers would set themselves up as self-employed, often as a Ltd company, and work with an agency to reduce the payout on things like tax and national insurance. This allowed them to keep more of the money they earned hour-by-hour.

However, with changes brought in by HMRC in April 2021, off-payroll working (known as IR35) or being self-employed can now be less attractive. This is because changes to IR35 now mean that self-employed drivers now pay broadly the same Income Tax and National Insurance as a PAYE employee would.

For this reason, it can be a much less attractive prospect.

As such, the main difference between PAYE vs self-employed HGV drivers is how they are employed.

PAYE vs Self Employed HGV Driving - HGV Training Network

        PAYE

PAYE stands for ‘Pay As You Earn’ and allows your employer to deduct your income tax and NI contributions before they pay your wages.

To identify how much you pay, your tax code (a short series of numbers and letters) can be changed by HMRC each year based on how much you have earned and how much tax you have, or haven’t, paid.

        Self-employed

If you are self-employed, however, you (or your accountant) will need to file your own self-assessment tax return, using bank statements and receipts from the year before the 5th of April.

Based on the report you submit, HMRC will then calculate your tax and NI contributions, which you need to pay by the following January.

For unscrupulous people, altering self-assessment tax returns is a way you can pay less tax and NI than you really should – something that the IR35 changes aim to resolve.

Drivers CPC Check - HGV Training
          blog, HGV News

If you’re looking into becoming a fully qualified HGV driver, or a driver of similar vehicles, you may have heard of driver CPC training – also known as driver Certificate of Professional Competence training.

But while there’s plenty of information out there about HGV training courses and the steps involved in the process, you may be scratching your head over certain aspects of driver CPC courses and the certificate itself. It’s not as talked about, but that doesn’t make it any less important if you want to get out on the open road and turn driving into an enjoyable, profitable career.

At HGV Training Network, we’re experts in driver training and helped hundreds of satisfied learners fulfil their goals and become reliable, professional drivers. With this in mind, here are a few things you might want to know about the CPC, and why it’s so essential.

Why do I need to complete CPC training?

CPC is an essential component of anyone wishing to drive large vehicles for a living, such as buses and lorries.

While the driving test you will undergo is designed to show you have the necessary skills and knowledge to drive to the minimum standard, think of the CPC as the ‘gap-filler’ of the driving test world. It is in place for you to demonstrate key knowledge and decision-making skills you will use during your driving career that will help keep yourself and others safe on the road.

Completing your CPC before becoming a driver is also a legal requirement. According to the EU directive, drivers must hold their CPC alongside their other relevant qualifications (such as an HGV licence) in order to drive professionally.

Drivers CPC Check - HGV Training

How many hours of CPC training do I need to complete?

New drivers must complete a mandatory 35 hours of CPC training before they complete their CPC exam, pass, and finally get behind the wheel.

But the same is true of existing drivers, too. Current drivers of large vehicles must also complete 35 hours of CPC training every 5 years if they want their certificate to remain valid. This is known as driver CPC periodic training.

If drivers do not complete the mandatory 35 hours of periodic CPC training, their certificate will be voided and they must re-earn it by taking the relevant exams again. As such, they will not be legally allowed to drive large vehicles until they’ve regained it.

Did you know – at HGVTN, we have over 300 5-star reviews on Google of students who’ve all undergone driving training with us, including earning their CPC!

How do I perform a drivers CPC check?

If you’re wondering precisely how many hours of CPC training you’ve completed, there is a handy online tool you can use at GOV.UK to keep track of everything making it easy to do a drivers CPC check – take a look at it here.

Not only is this great for you to view how many hours you’ve completed, but it is also helpful for your training instructors and employers (if they’re involved) to see how you’re progressing – you can create their own bespoke login on your account.

Just be aware that your chosen training centre must have registered you for your CPC training course before you’re able to view your progress using this tool.

Drivers CPC Check - HGV Training

          Will CPC training be scrapped?

In short, no. Despite online rumblings that the CPC may be removed from UK driver training courses post-Brexit, CPC training remains an essential part of driver training and must be completed if you wish to drive lorries or similarly large vehicles.

Is CPC training classed as working time?

One of the many benefits of CPC training is that it can, in some instances, count towards your weekly working hours. For example, if you have been ordered to complete CPC training by your employer, so you can continue to provide your company with driving services, these hours can count towards your work hours.

In other words, as a driver, CPC hours help you get paid. Sounds pretty good, right?

Can you fail a CPC course?

It is possible to fail elements of your CPC course. For example, module 4 of the CPC test – which covers practical demonstrations – can be failed if you are unable to show you can properly:

          • Load the vehicle following all safety rules
          • Assess emergency scenarios
          • Reduce physical risks to yourself and others
          • Perform a walkaround check of the vehicle

          Among other factors.

The pass/fail rates of each test segment will be given to you ahead of time, so you are fully aware of your results and what they mean. If you fail, you can rebook the test for a later date.

Is there still a HGV driver shortage? - HGV Training Network
            blog, HGV News

For the past few years, the headlines have been full of worrying reports of an HGV shortage – a shortage which was no doubt worsened by the COVID pandemic and working restrictions after Brexit.

These factors also combined with the early retirement of current drivers and the ever increasing market for online shopping – meaning that more drivers than ever need to be on our roads.

So, has the HGV shortage been rectified or is it set to continue?

Do we need more HGV drivers?

In the periods in and immediately after the last lockdown from March 2021 onwards, there was a shortage of approximately 100,000+ HGV drivers, leading to issues with product availability.

In the years that have followed, thanks in part to measures brought in by the UK government, the HGV driver shortage has decreased, but current estimates suggest we still need around 35,000 to 40,000 HGV drivers to keep products on the shelves and arriving at your home.

*Did You Know? HGV Training Network can help you find your first job after your HGV training – reducing the HGV shortage – thanks to our partnership with Blue Arrow!

Is there still a HGV driver shortage? - HGV Training Network

When will the HGV shortage end?

Previous government initiatives, including Boot Camps that retrained people as HGV drivers for a lower cost or free, and increased pay or other benefits from employers, have gone a long way to limit HGV shortages and have had a marked impact.

However, while it has improved, the industry still faces issues, including:

            • Job gaps left by EU citizens
            • An ageing workforce – only around 2% of HGV drivers are under 25 and the average age of HGV drivers is still around 55
            • IR35, or intermediaries legislation – UK tax legislation which has vastly changed employment practices and attractiveness for HGV drivers
            • An ever-increasing trend for online shopping and the rise of retail giants, like Temu and Shein, who sell products widely in large volume across the globe
            • Public opinion of HGV driving as a career choice

As such, the industry are expecting to feel the influence of the HGV shortage for a while to come, especially during very busy periods, like Christmas.

HGV License Renewal - HGV Training Network
              blog, HGV News

If you’ve just become a fully qualified HGV driver, or if you’ve been driving HGVs (AKA LGVs) for some years now, you may be starting to wonder, “Do I need to renew my HGV licence?”.

It’s an important question and one you should take seriously if you wish to continue enjoying a long and prosperous career as an HGV driver. But with so many technical details surrounding HGV licence renewals, it can all get a bit confusing at times – “When do I need to renew my HGV licence?” “How do I renew my HGV licence?” “Do I need to retake my HGV test?” and so on.

Luckily, HGV Training Network is here to help. So if you need more details about renewing your current licence, or if your licence expired some time ago and you’re looking to get back into the game, here are a few things you might find helpful.

Did You Know – HGV Training Network is home to over 50 official HGV training centres scattered across the country? So you can boost your driving ability and earn your HGV licence without too much commuting. Get in touch to find your closest training centre today!

Do I need to renew my HGV licence?

In short, yes. The law dictates that you must renew your HGV licence once every five years from the time of first passing your HGV examination and earning your licence. Failure to renew your licence properly means you will be driving illegally every time you step behind the wheel of an HGV, making renewing your licence on time an absolute must if you wish to keep working. Once you have your renewed licence, you’re free to continue driving.

If you allow your HGV licence to expire without renewing it, you will need to retake your HGV driver training and driving test (both practical and theory tests) before being appointed a brand new licence, including your certificate of professional competence (CPC training). This can cost you a lot of time and money, as an expired licence renders you unable to provide for yourself or your family for a time if you drive HGVs for a living, which is why renewing on time should be your biggest priority.

HGV License Renewal - HGV Training Network

              LGV licence renewal

Whether you refer to the vehicle you drive as an HGV or LGV, if you were appointed your licence in the UK, the rules remain the same – you must renew your LGV licence once every five years if you wish to continue driving large vehicles. Luckily, the process is relatively straightforward.

              DVLA HGV licence renewal

Recent changes in the rules mean that the HGV renewal process differs depending on your age – one set of rules for those under 45, and another set of rules for those over 45.

If you are under the age of 45, the process shouldn’t cause you too much hassle. You can renew your HGV licence with the DVLA by following these easy steps:

              • Complete and return the D47PU form – this form should be sent to you automatically within 56 days of your licence expiring. If time is running short and you still have not received the form, you can order the correct forms yourself at this link.
              • Enclose your current HGV licence with the form. You should receive your new licence in the post promptly before your renewal date.

If you are over the age of 45, all of the above still applies, but you will be expected to complete a medical examination report form (D4 form).

You are still able to drive HGVs whilst waiting for your new licence, unless there are special circumstances involved, such as having your licence revoked, or if medical conditions may affect your driving performance. If you’re unsure, you should check with the DVLA.

If you need to change any of the information on your lorry licence – for example, the photo on your photocard licence or if your name has changed – or if you have a paper driving licence, you’ll need to include any relevant documentation confirming these changes before you can receive your new HGV driving licence.

For a new photo, indicate on the form that you need a new picture on your valid licence and include a clear passport photo when you send everything to the DVLA. If your previous licence is a paper licence, you’ll also need to include original documentation confirming your identity along with a passport photo.
Have any other burning questions about HGV licences? Ask away! Get in touch with the team at HGV Training Network and we’d be happy to help.

              DVLA HGV medical renewal

Once you hit the age of 45, undergoing a medical is non-negotiable if you wish to continue driving HGVs. This is to ensure you’re still medically fit to drive HGVs and are not a danger to yourself or others when behind the wheel. You may be banned from driving if you’re found unfit to drive HGVs for medical reasons.

Order the D4 form and take it to your doctor. The doctor will then perform a medical assessment and fill out the form for you before you need to return it with the rest of your documents. Assuming you pass the medical assessment, you should receive your new HGV licence as expected.

Renewal of lorry and bus driving licence

Whether you are renewing a lorry or bus licence, all of the above processes still apply. Simply order the correct forms from the DVLA, fill them out, and return them after having completed any other necessities. You can learn more about this process at the GOV.UK website here.

              HGV licence renewal over 65

There are also different rules in place for renewing your HGV licence if you are over 65. Once you hit 65 the period between renewals changes from five years to one – meaning you must renew your HGV licence once a year, every year, after the age of 65. This will include a medical assessment. If you fall into this category and need an HGV licence renewal, you can follow the same GOV.UK link as above for guidance.

Can you drive a HGV on a bus licence? - HGV Training Network
                blog, HGV News

If you currently drive buses and coaches but fancy a career change, you might well be considering if HGV driving is an option for you.

Sure, they are both large, heavy vehicles – but thanks to the difference in cargo, you need a different licence altogether.

Read on to find out everything you need to know about driving an HGV with a bus licence.

Can you drive a bus on an HGV licence?

So, simply put, no – you can’t drive a bus if you have any of the HGV licences, including:

                • Class 1 – (Cat C + E)
                • Class 2 – (Cat C)
                • 7.5 Ton – (Cat C1)

Instead, you will have to retrain for a Passenger Carrying Vehicle (PCV) qualification, which enables you to drive buses and coaches and carry a range of passengers to their chosen destinations.

Can you drive a HGV on a bus licence? - HGV Training Network

Can I drive a coach on an HGV license?

As with aspiring bus drivers, anyone looking to drive a coach will need to have a PCV qualification and licence.

                The PCV licences include:

                • Bus and coach licence (Cat D)

The Category D licence allows drivers in the UK and Europe to drive buses and coaches with up to 64 passengers, as either a single or double-decker bus.

With a possible salary of up to £40k and incredibly high job satisfaction that empowers you to put you and your career first – it’s not surprising so many people are changing jobs!

                • Minibus licence (Cat D1)

If you are looking to drive minibuses as opposed to a bus or coach, you will need to train and qualify for your D1 licence.

With this licence, you can drive vehicles that have:

                • Up to 16 passenger seats
                • A length that doesn’t exceed 8m
                • A trailer with a maximum capacity of 750kg

When driving these vehicles, average salaries can range from £30-£35k per annum, rising with experience.

Can you drive a HGV on a bus licence? - HGV Training Network

                Can PCV drivers drive HGV?

Just as HGV drivers can’t drive Passenger Carrying Vehicle (PCV), PCV drivers don’t have the required qualification needed to drive HGVs safely on the road.

                HGV licences include:

                • Class 1 – (Cat C + E)

The largest vehicles on the road, Class 1 drivers can drive vehicles weighting from 7.5-44 tonnes with detachable trailers and can earn between £40-£55k per annum.

                • Class 2 – (Cat C)

Drivers of Class 2 vehicles can legally control over 7.5 tonnes, up to 32 tonnes with rigid bases.

With this licence you can also drive fire engines and refuse lorries, earning a wage of around £40k per year.

                • 7.5 Ton – (Cat C1)

This licence can be included in your current driver’s licence, depending on when you gained it, and allows you to drive rigid vehicles that weigh between 3.5-7.5 tonnes – including ambulances and horse boxes.

With this licence, you can expect to earn around £30k per year.

To gain these qualifications, you will need to find a reputable HGV training centre near you from which to complete your training and gain your qualifications.

And thanks to your experience driving very large vehicles on the UKs roads, you will likely find that you can complete your HGV training much faster than you might have thought.

HGV Funding - HGV Training Network
                  blog, HGV News

If you’ve been considering a job switch in recent months, entering the world of HGV driving could be the career gear shift that you’ve been looking for.

HGV drivers enjoy excellent wages, independence in their role, and the chance to explore areas they may never usually visit – amongst a host of other benefits.

However, some people wishing to become HGV drivers may be deterred because they’re unable to afford HGV training to earn their HGV licence. Or, while they may be able to afford it, paying for the course may cause considerable financial strain they could do without.

This is why funding for HGV training can be a godsend for those desperate to change their situation and enter a new and exciting industry. Funding for HGV training can alleviate the financial pressures felt by so many, allowing them to learn their new trade without constantly worrying about their bank account.

But what funding is available for HGV training? How do people take advantage of free training? Does any of it need to be paid back? And, most importantly, will free HGV training be available forever? Keep reading to have your questions answered on funding for HGV training and reach out to HGV Training Network if you’d like to know more…

Funding for HGV Training - HGV Training Network

Does funding apply to HGV training?

The short answer is yes – there is currently funding available to those seeking to become HGV drivers, earn their HGV licence and certificate of professional competence.

If you are unable to afford HGV training or if paying for HGV training would put you into the red financially, looking into funding for HGV training is a wise move while it is available (more on that in a moment).

Is there government funding for HGV training?

Yes, at the moment, government funding is available to those who wish to become new HGV drivers. But it might not last much longer…

Launched by the government in 2021, HGV skills bootcamps were created to encourage new and young drivers to enter the transport and logistics sector due to the gap created by too many lorry drivers retiring, as well as the losses created by the pandemic and the impacts of Brexit.

These free training courses give new drivers the chance to learn the skills they need to drive heavy goods vehicles competently and professionally, while earning their HGV licence and CPC qualification, so they can apply for real HGV jobs once their training is complete. The government covers the costs involved in the bootcamps, making them an ideal choice for those without the necessary funds to pay for training on their own.

As a result of these bootcamps, thousands of new drivers have entered the fray and significantly reduced the national lack of drivers, allowing companies to hire new drivers quickly and keep the distribution industry in the UK moving at a good pace to the benefit of everyone.

Because of the success of the bootcamps, the government has chosen to extend the initiative on several occasions, giving even more people the chance to become drivers without worrying about the cost.

However, while it is encouraging that the government seems to be in favour of skills bootcamps, there is no evidence they will continue beyond their current run – which is set to end on the 31st of March 2024 at the time of writing. After this time, government-funded HGV skills bootcamps will no longer be available, unless the government chooses to extend the initiative once again.

If it is not renewed, enthusiastic future drivers will need to seek out other sources of funding – including reaching out to distribution companies that offer to cover the cost of training to bring a new driver on board.

Funding for HGV Training - HGV Training Network

What companies pay for HGV training?

If government-funded bootcamps are not available or don’t sound like the solution for you, you could always reach out to transport companies directly or research companies that are willing to fund HGV driver training, in exchange for a job later down the line.

This is a method that seems to work well for a lot of companies – they cover the cost of driver training and, in return, gain a new driver to offer his or her services in a part-time or full-time capacity.

The beauty of this setup is that a driver may have their training funding covered by a company, and work for that company for a set time while being paid, but will still be able to apply their new driving skills to an infinite number of jobs in the future.

The best way to determine which companies will be willing to cover the cost of HGV driver training is to put in some serious research time. A quick Google search will reveal transport and distribution companies in your local area – drop them an email or give them a call to see if they have any HGV driver funding initiatives and are actively seeking drivers. You might strike gold.

Does the funding cover 100% of the training?

In the case of the government-funded skills bootcamps, the government covers the entire cost of the HGV driver training, making it a very attractive choice for those looking to save a few pennies.

When it comes to companies offering HGV training funding in exchange for a work contract, many of them do cover the entire cost – though this is down to each company.

If you reach out to a company to discuss their funding options, be sure to check whether they’re willing to cover the entire cost. But as long as you find an agreement that suits your needs, you’ll be on a good footing to become an HGV driver.

Funding for HGV Training - HGV Training Network

Who is eligible for HGV training funding?

As long as you are over the age of 19 and have a full UK driving licence (cat B), you are eligible to apply for HGV training via a government-funded skills bootcamp.

You may also be eligible for a skills bootcamp if you have recently become unemployed and are actively looking to get back into work – some bootcamps have been specifically aimed at those who are out of work and want to boost their skills to secure more jobs in the future.

In terms of private funding from companies, they may set their own parameters as to who is eligible for funding, so be sure to discuss this with them when you first speak to make sure you qualify.

Do you have to be a UK citizen for funding to apply?

Yes, to secure government funding for a skills bootcamp, you will need to be a UK citizen.

It is also highly likely that you will need to be a UK citizen to secure funded training with a company, but again, they will have their own parameters which should be discussed.

Do you have to pay back any funding for HGV training?

The beauty of the government-funded skills bootcamps for HGV training is that the entire cost is covered by the state – meaning you won’t need to pay back a penny.

Depending on the specifics of the deal you reach with a private company – should you go down this route – you may need to pay back the cost of some or all of the training over time. But many of them offer to cover the cost of the training in full to secure your services.

Funding for HGV Training - HGV Training Network

How to apply for HGV funding?

To apply for a government-funded HGV skills bootcamp before they expire in March 2024, you can search the official directory of skills bootcamp providers on the government website here.

These training providers are filtered by location, making it easy to find a skills bootcamp near you.

Is it better to do HGV training on funding or personal finance?

The answer to this question is down to your personal circumstances.

For many, the option to receive funding to cover the cost of HGV training can be a massive help, allowing them to focus on their studies safely in the knowledge they are financially stable.

Having said that, if you’re able to afford to fund your own HGV training and would rather avoid the rigmarole of applying for funding – or rushing to meet the March 2024 deadline –  privately funding your HGV studies is a valid option chosen by many.

Alternatively, at HGV Training Network, we’re home to an attractive finance package which will allow you to pay for your HGV training in more manageable chunks, rather than a single lump sum.

If you’d like to know more about our finance packages, or our driving courses, feel free to get in touch with us today to take the first step on becoming a fully-fledged HGV driver.

The world of professional HGV driving is incredibly lucrative, with high salaries and plenty of job opportunities to choose from.

But before you can get behind the wheel and become an HGV driver, you’ll need to complete both theory and practical HGV driver training with a trusted training provider.

If you’re eager to fully understand the ins and outs of the HGV training process and everything you can expect from a HGV training course, keep reading to find out all you need to know.

HGV training process - HGV Training Network

                    What’s involved in HGV training?

Just like learning to drive a car, HGV driver training involves plenty of hands-on training and preparation, a theory test, and a practical examination at the end of the course.

Step 1 – Pass your medical

To ensure you’re fit to drive an HGV safely on the road, you’ll first have to undergo a medical exam.

Your medical will be conducted by a doctor, who will then fill out an official DVLA form outlining vital health details – the questions they ask will help them establish whether you have any conditions that may hinder your ability to drive safely, such as sleep disorders or neurological problems.

Then, it’s up to the DVLA to give you the green light to begin your HGV training.

                    Step 2 – Pass a theory test

After getting the all-clear from the DVLA, you can start looking towards your theory examination – revising for this can be done even before you’re cleared to drive if you want to get ahead of the game.

The theory test is split into two: a multiple-choice section to assess your knowledge of the road and the hazard perception, which evaluates your understanding of potential hazards.

You must pass your theory exam to undertake your practical test – for more information about the theory section of our training courses, take a look at our HGV Theory Test Explained blog.

Step 3 – Pass your practical driver training

Once you’ve completed your theory, you’ll start your practical training and learn how to operate a heavy goods vehicle correctly.

You’ll only learn from a qualified and seasoned instructor, who has “been there and done that” – under their guidance, you’ll gain the essential driving skills required to pass your practical test.

After passing your practical examination, you’ll gain your HGV licence and become a newly qualified driver ready to embark on the final part of training and enter the exciting and satisfying world of HGV driving.

Step 4 – Do your CPC training

Your HGV training course concludes with the completion of your initial driver CPC, also known as a Driver Certificate of Professional Competence – all HGV drivers must complete their CPC before applying for professional driver roles.

The CPC qualification is split into two modules: the case study test and the practical demonstration test.

After passing, you’ll be issued a Driver Qualification Card (DQC), valid for 5 years – after which you’ll have to complete driver CPC training again.

                    Is HGV training hard?

For many, the thought of tests often invokes feelings of dread – however, with the correct preparation and guidance from experienced instructors who know how to help you pass with flying colours, the process is made much easier.

Similarly to your car test, the following will make your HGV training course feel like a breeze:

                    1. Effective revision materials
Official revision software that explores everything you need to know for your theory test should support you in passing the first time – this can include the official DVLA pack, apps or textbooks depending on your preference.
                    2. Quality training
Learning from the best instructors who know exactly what examiners are looking for from students can make your training more straightforward.
By having plenty of experience in the industry, they’re aware of the best ways to teach budding HGV drivers how to drive vehicles that are much bigger than the cars and bikes they’re familiar with.
                    3. Plenty of practice
Although it may sound incredibly cliche, “practice makes perfect” is certainly key when it comes to making your HGV training much simpler.
By practising turns and manoeuvres over and over, you naturally become more familiar with operating HGVs, meaning gaining your licence will be less difficult.
                    4. Calmness and confidence
Keeping calm and composed, whilst having the confidence to know you can achieve your HGV licence will help to ease the pressure you may feel towards your HGV test.
Working with your instructor and plenty of practice will help to alleviate test nerves.

How long does an HGV course take?

On the whole, it can take between 2-3 months from applying for your provisional HGV licence to gaining your full licence.

                    Here’s an average training breakdown

If you have previous training, you may only need to complete your driver CPC – if you need clarification, it’s best to contact the HGV Training Network today for further guidance.

What HGV licence do I need first?

To undertake any HGV training, whether it be to qualify as a 7.5-ton lorry or Class 1 driver, you’ll need an HGV provisional licence of the correct class, awarded by the DVLA.

You can read all about how to apply for a provisional HGV licence at GOV.UK.

It’s important to note changes in the law as of November 15th 2021 – this regulation states that anyone looking to gain their Class 1 can now jump straight to this training without having previously earned their Class 2 Cat C licence.

All you need to do is send your driving licence off with a completed D2 application, which means you’ll have the C+E provisional entitlement put on your licence, enabling you to undergo Class 1 training.

                    HGV Training Requirements

There are a few requirements you need to be aware of before booking your place on an HGV training course in the UK.

Firstly, you must be medically fit to drive a vehicle, as outlined previously. This is why you need to undergo a mandatory medical test conducted by a medical professional before you start learning.

And, as obvious as it may sound, you’ll also need to hold a Category B licence, also known as a standard car licence – it must be in date, so be sure to get it renewed if needed.

Lastly, you must be 18 or over to participate in HGV training.

What do I learn during HGV training?

During your HGV training course, you’ll learn the ins and outs of HGV driving, from how to operate a much bigger vehicle to vital vehicle safety checks necessary by law.

Here’s a list of what you can expect to learn on your HGV training course:
