However, they’re often completed far sooner than 16 weeks and can see drivers heading onto the road remarkably quickly.
The bootcamp will cover all aspects of a more traditional HGV training course – like the ones provided by HGV Training Network – just in a far more time-restricted way. This includes your theory revision, theory test (including your hazard perception and CPC exams) as well as your practical revision and test. What is the HGV hazard perception test?
The hazard perception test is part of your overall HGV theory test, which also includes a section of multiple choice questions and a CPC qualification case study – all of which the HGV Training Network can assist you with.
The hazard perception element of your theory test is designed to analyse your hazard perception skills. Specifically, your ability to detect and react to a hazard developing in front of you, to ensure you’re able to properly react to potential hazards in a real-life situation while you’re out on the road driving HGVs.
Much like the hazard perception test included in your standard driving test, during your hazard perception test you will be seated in front of a computer screen and shown several clips (18 at the time of writing) that all include developing hazards you would expect to run into while driving. Your job is to spot the developing hazards as soon as they appear and click your mouse as quickly as possible – the quicker you click, the higher your reaction time and the better your hazard perception test score will be. Passing the theory test is a crucial part of completing your HGV training. Doing so first time will ensure you’re quickly on the roads!
Each hazard perception test clip will have at least one actual hazard – none of the clips are trying to trip you up – so if you reach the end of a clip without clicking, you’ve missed the hazard and lost your score for that clip.
While it may sound daunting, you only need a score of 67 out of 100 to pass your hazard perception test (at the time of writing), so there’s plenty of opportunity to not be as quick off the mark as you’d like. As long as you spot the hazards and respond within an appropriate amount of time, you’ll pass.
Is the HGV hazard perception test similar to a car hazard perception test?
The HGV hazard perception test is virtually identical to the standard car hazard perception test. Both tests require users to click when they spot something that may develop into a hazard, or a hazard unfolding during the video. If you have taken a standard car hazard perception test previously and are familiar with the process, you should feel very comfortable during your HGV hazard perception test.
How long is the HGV hazard perception test?
The time you have to spend on your HGV hazard perception test will be split between this test and your HGV theory test – with both being completed in the same session. In total, you will be allocated 2 hours to complete this examination, with 75 minutes to use on your multiple-choice questions and the remaining 45 minutes on your HGV hazard perception test.
However, if you’re concerned about a medical condition that may make it difficult to complete your HGV hazard perception test and multiple choice test in the allotted time, speak to your examiner. They may be able to offer you more time.

When is the best time to click during the HGV hazard perception test?
If you’re unsure or nervous, don’t click. This is something seen often when people are unsettled or uneasy with the hazard perception test, people will click anywhere and hope for the best that one of them has to be right – whereas, in reality, you’ll just end up with a weaker score as the computer will assume you don’t know and you are just guessing. Try to compose yourself and click smart.
Awareness and understanding of developing hazards are essential. There are two types of hazard – a standard hazard and a developing hazard. As part of your theory test, you will be asked to spot and identify both.
You may be unsure what qualifies as a developing hazard – but the DVLA defines a developing hazard as ‘something which would cause you to take action, like changing speed or direction.’ A good example of this would be a car parked on the side of the road that isn’t moving – as your driving would be unaffected by it, there is no hazard. However if the car’s right-hand indicator began to flash, and the car began to move away it becomes a developing hazard as you will have to take action in response and click as soon as you see the indicator flashing. A standard hazard, on the other hand, is something that is immediately classed as a hazard as soon as it comes into your eyeline, rather than gradually becoming one.
How many clicks do you get on an HGV hazard perception test?
Technically, there is no limit on how many times you can click during your HGV hazard perception test. However, clicking repeatedly or clicking in a specific pattern in the belief this will help you pass is not a good strategy. Too many clicks will indicate that you can’t actually detect a developing or live hazard, meaning you’re not ready to take your practical test. In the same breath, clicking constantly will show you’re not taking your test seriously, and the examiner may choose to speak with you about this. You should only click when you see something you believe will develop into a hazard or a hazard in action.
What counts as a hazard in the hazard perception test?
A car that’s parked on the side of the road is just one example of something that could turn into a potential hazard. Other hazards you will spot on the test include:
Vehicles suddenly appearing from junctions or side streets
Vehicles randomly crossing into your lane of traffic
Stray objects, people or animals on the road
Broken down vehicles
Cyclists and horse riders
Troublesome weather conditions
Uneven road surfaces
Narrow roads and more.
There are a lot of hazards to take in on the hazard perception test clips and it can be difficult to know what counts as a hazard and whether or not you should click. If you’re ever second-guessing yourself, remember this tip – if you feel you would need to apply your brakes or check your mirrors, you should click.
Can you take a mock HGV hazard perception test?
If you want some in-depth HGV hazard perception test practice, you’re able to take mock tests before your actual test to make sure your reaction times are on point, giving yourself the best chance of passing the first time.
Like with all things, practice does make perfect – especially with tests like this. HGVTN will provide all of the practice hazard perception tests you need to ensure that you are fully confident and comfortable at identifying the various hazards you could be presented with.
But if you’d like to begin your studies well ahead of time, you could take a mock hazard perception test online – there are plenty to choose from. Depending on the practice test you choose, these could include real camera footage clips or hazard perception CGI clips – either way, they’re a useful resource.
What’s included in the HGV hazard perception test?
After answering your multiple-choice questions, the hazard perception will start. The instructions outlining how to use the software will appear beforehand, such as clicking your mouse when you first spot a hazard. It will also warn you that repeatedly clicking will lead you to fail the test.
Then, the test will start – you’ll be shown 19 video clips to respond to, each lasting 60 seconds. The format is standard across all the videos, with various hazards shown from the driver’s perspective. 18 of the clips contain one hazard while 1/19 contains two, meaning you’ll need to keep alert throughout.
Examples of the hazards you can expect include:
• Pedestrians suddenly crossing without looking
• Vehicles pulling out onto the main road suddenly
• Hazardous driving conditions, such as icy roads
• Cyclists who don’t indicate
• Emergency vehicles
• HGVs and tractors obstructing your view ahead
The more mock hazard perception tests you complete in the run-up to your test, the better. Being well-practised ensures you will be more confident at identifying hazards, will be familiar with the test formatting, and means you will know what to expect when you take your real test – helping you feel more relaxed and less stressed.
How long is the HGV hazard perception test?
You’ll have two hours to complete the theory test: one hour and 15 minutes are dedicated to the multiple-choice section, whilst 45 minutes are allocated to the hazard perception.

There are a lot of things to think about before you can get behind the wheel of one of our learner vehicles, though – the most important of which is gaining your HGV provisional licence.
But how much will a provisional HGV licence cost and how do you get one?

Why do I need an HGV provisional licence?
Put simply, a provisional HGV licence allows you to begin HGV training and embark on your new professional driving career.
Just as you can’t start car driving lessons without a provisional licence, students undertaking HGV training need to apply for and receive their provisional licence before they can get started.
The provisional licence gives you the right to be on the road, under a specific set of circumstances, including using vehicles with clearly displayed ‘L’ or learner plates and driving while accompanied by an instructor.
The type of licence you need is determined by what kind of vehicle you intend to drive at the end of your HGV training.
*If you received your Cat B (car) licence before 1st January 1997, you don’t need to add any further entitlement to your licence to drive a vehicle up to 7.5 tonnes. Hooray! If you got your licence on 2nd January 1997 or later, you would have to pass the C1 test to gain the entitlement to your licence.

Just like the Cat B car licence, provisional HGV licences do not have an associated cost – making them completely free for those looking to undertake HGV training!
The application process includes filling in a D2 form yourself and finding a doctor, optician, and/or private firm to fill out your D4 form – both of which should be sent with your photocard driving licence to the DVLA.
The D4 form is a medical examination report that a medical professional completes to sign you off as safe to be on the road in such large, heavy vehicles. The medical form includes sections on your overall health and a section on your eyesight – which may need to be filled in by an optician or optometrist if your doctor can’t complete the vision assessment fully.

What is the HGV theory test?
The HGV theory test is an assessment you must undertake to prove you have the required working knowledge of HGVs (and the roads in general) to drive them safely.
Not dissimilar to the theory test you will have taken when learning to drive standard cars, you’ll be required to revise well beforehand and then put your knowledge into practice during the test.
If you pass both your HGV theory test and your HGV practical test (including acquiring all relevant paperwork and qualifications) you’ll be able to drive HGVs legally and use these newfound skills to pursue a career as an HGV driver.
What does the HGV theory test involve?
Your HGV driver theory training is very similar to the theory test you may have taken for your car driving test. You can apply for it as soon as you get your provisional licence.
It is made up of two parts, a multiple choice theory test section and a hazard perception test section, both of which are completed as on-screen tests in a DVSA test centre.
If you are pushed for time, you can take both sections on separate days, in any order – as long as you complete both parts within 2 years of each other.
It is important to note that while you can complete your theory and practical training at the same time, this is not necessarily recommended as it can:
· Increase the amount of time it takes to gain your theory certificate.
· Give you lots of things to do at once – making it harder to focus on learning the theory and practical skills.
Similarly to a standard driving theory test, you can revise for your HGV theory test from the comfort of your own home, or anywhere you choose, as long as you have the correct learning materials and a device to view them on (if you’re viewing digital content).
The DVSA has an official theory test kit for drivers of heavy goods vehicles, in which you will find examples of both sections of the theory test, including an impressive 130 interactive hazard perception test clips. This can be purchased through the official DVSA website.
Alternatively, you’re also able to buy books that can aid your studies, including copies of the official highway code, an official guide to driving goods vehicles, traffic sign quiz books, and much more to ensure you’re fully equipped to handle any questions that are thrown at you.
There are also plenty of free online resources and practice tests you can take advantage of to give yourself the best shot at passing the real test on the first try. Video examples of hazard perception test scenarios are excellent ways to train your brain to spot hazards early.
Best ways to study for the HGV theory test
In the weeks leading up to your HGV theory test, you should try and set aside time (an hour is usually a great start, if not longer) every day to take mock tests and allow your mind to soak up all the information it needs to pass.
Your environment is also important during this revision time. If you are in a noisy or crowded environment, it can be easy to become distracted, meaning you won’t be fully focused on learning answers to the questions you need to pass the HGV theory test. On top of this, accurately keeping track of oncoming hazards during a practice hazard perception test would be near impossible.
Try to find a quiet space where you won’t be disturbed – wear headphones if it helps you keep your eyes on your revision – and dedicate yourself exclusively to revising for your theory test. The effort you put in here will help you reap the rewards later.
There are 100 multiple-choice questions and you will have 1 hour and 15 minutes to answer them all – but you don’t have to use all of this time.
You’ll read the question carefully and select one answer by pressing the touchscreen or using the mouse. You won’t see on-screen if the answer is correct or not, as it will just move on to the next question.
If you get to a question you aren’t sure about, you can ‘flag’ it by choosing the flag option at the top of the screen and come back to the flagged questions at the end – giving you a bit longer to work out the answer.
Similarly, you can also go back to any previous questions and change your answers at any time before you finish the test.
To pass this section successfully, you will need to score at least 85 out of 100.
Hazard perception test
Before this section of the test starts, you’ll see a video explaining how the system works – but if you practice with hazard perception test clips, it will be much the same.
You’ll see 19 CGI clips that feature everyday scenes of roadways in the UK – mimicking what you may see while out driving – and have 60 minutes to complete the test.
Each clip will include 1 developing hazard that you need to identify, and one clip will feature 2 hazards. The sooner you spot the hazards, the more points you will get, with a range of 0-5 possible points per clip.
The DVSA defines a developing hazard as ‘something that would cause you to take action, like changing speed or direction.’ important in ensuring driver safety.
When you click, a small red flag will appear at the bottom of the screen, marking your response while the clip continues.
You will not lose points for clicking at an incorrect time, but you must not click continuously or in a pattern as this will be viewed as an attempt at cheating and you will score 0 for that clip.
You also will not be able to go back and redo any of the clips. Not to worry though, if you miss a few clips or only spot the hazard very late– you can still get enough points to pass, so try to start with a clean slate for every clip and stay calm.
To pass this section, you will need to score a minimum of 67 out of 100.
What is the pass mark for the HGV theory test?
To pass the multiple choice section of your HGV theory test successfully, you will need to score at least 85 out of 100.
To pass the hazard perception test section of your HGV theory test, you will need to score a minimum of 67 out of 100.
How many questions are in the HGV theory test?
You’ll be given 100 multiple-choice questions in your HGV theory test and will be shown a total of 19 clips in the hazard perception part of your test.
A maximum score in the multiple choice is 100/100. However, even though there are only 19 clips in the hazard perception section, this is also scored out of 100, with scores being determined by your ability to spot hazards in good time.
How long does the HGV theory test take?
In total, you will be given 2 hours to complete both sections of your HGV theory test – with 1 hour and 15 minutes allotted to your multiple choice questions and the remaining 45 minutes to your hazard perception test. But you don’t need to use all of this time if you don’t need to. Learn more about the length of the HGV test.
On test day, you will need to take one of the following:
· A Great Britain photocard driving licence
· A Northern Ireland photocard driving licence (and paper counterpart)
· An EU photocard driving licence (and paper counterpart if you have one)
If you don’t have a photocard driving licence, you should bring your paper licence and a valid passport instead – if you don’t bring these documents, you will not be able to attempt your theory test and will need to pay for another. You should also bring a bottle of water and make sure you have had a good meal to help you concentrate.
You shouldn’t take anything except your ID, your locker key, and a bottle of water into the room with you – you can store everything else in the lockers provided.

What is the procedure for test day?
Test day is much the same for everyone. While there are DVSA staff there to help you, it can be reassuring to know what to expect.
Once you arrive at the test centre, you will stow away your belongings in a locker. You will need to take your ID, key, and water with you, ensuring your phone is turned off and locked away. There will be toilet facilities available and it’s best to use these before you go in.
You will then move to the main waiting space and check in, showing your ID and signing a declaration ready to take your test. After, you’ll wait in the waiting room before you are called in by name and shown to the computer room for the test.
Once in the computer room, you will be asked to empty your pockets and DVSA staff will check your ears for hidden communication devices, ensuring people can’t cheat during the test. They will then recap the rules of the tests and show you to your computer station.
You will then take the test. If you pass, you will be presented with your theory test certificate as proof of your achievement.

Technically, you do not need to undergo any formal HGV training before undertaking your HGV theory test – revising with the available materials and practicing using example hazard perception test videos or software will give you all the tools you need to pass.
However, some active knowledge of HGVs and driving HGVs will only aid you in your theory test attempts, which is why it’s always recommended to have undergone some physical HGV training before taking your theory test. But you will need to have passed your HGV theory test before taking your practical test.
How to book the HGV theory test
When you’re confident that you’re ready to tackle your HGV theory test and you’ve put in a solid amount of revision in the weeks beforehand, you can head to the GOV.UK website to book your HGV theory test.
At this booking portal you’re also able to book tests for other kinds of vehicles, including standard cars, so be sure to choose the correct test when booking.
If you’ve already begun your practical training and need some advice on when to book your theory test, your instructor will be more than happy to advise.
Why do you need the HGV theory test?
The HGV theory test, much like standard car theory tests, is a legal requirement if you wish to drive HGVs, and is your opportunity to prove you’re able to not only understand but react to instances you will encounter when out on the road.
The knowledge you present in your HGV theory test (or lack of knowledge, if you fail) is a clear indicator of how effective – or ineffective – you would be when in command of an HGV. In failing the HGV theory test, you’ll be proving you’re not yet ready to get behind the wheel of a much larger vehicle and will need to retake the test after more revision and practice tests.
Luckily, you’re able to complete your HGV theory test at the same theory test centres as you would complete a standard car theory test. If you have already begun your HGV training or studies, your instructor may be able to advise you where the best place is for you to complete your HGV theory test, depending on your location. But should you need an extra hand, there is a handy tool on the GOV.UK website that lets you search out a local theory test centre based on your postcode – you can check that out here. Just be sure to specify which theory test you need to take before booking your slot.
Do I need IT skills to pass the HGV theory test?
Even though the HGV theory test is completed on a computer, you don’t necessarily need any serious IT skills to complete and pass your test. As long as you can use a mouse and check the right boxes in your multiple-choice test, and click at the appropriate time during your HGV hazard perception test, you’ll be fine. However, if you feel as though your IT skills are not up to this standard for whatever reason and you may need extra help completing your test, let your chosen test centre know either through your test application or by contacting them directly. They may be able to make some arrangements that will help you complete your test within the allocated time.
How many times can you take the HGV theory test?
Much like your car theory test, you are allowed to retake your HGV theory test as many times as you need to in order to pass. If you fail a HGV theory test, you will be given the option to try again and accept a date and time slot some time in the future. You can opt to take the nearest available slot, or take more time for your studies and book another test whenever it suits you. While passing the first time is ideal, many people take several attempts to pass their theory test and still go on to become excellent drivers, so do not be disheartened if you do not achieve an ideal mark the first time around.
At the time of writing, these are the current prices for both parts of the HGV theory test:
Part 1a (multiple-choice questions) – £26
Part 1b (hazard perception) – £11
This is payable when you book your theory test through the GOV.UK website. If you need to retake your HGV theory test, it will cost you the same price per attempt, unless the price increases between attempts.
Does the HGV theory test expire?
Similarly to the standard car theory test, you will have 2 years from the time of passing your HGV theory test to pass your practical test. However, unlike passing your standard car practical test, HGV drivers will also need to achieve their CPC certificate. If you are unable to pass the CPC test within two years of passing your multiple choice and hazard perception theory tests, you’ll need to complete these again to progress and take your practical exam.

How is the LGV theory test set up?
The LGV theory test is made up of two parts:
1a: Multiple choice test
1b: Hazard perception test
You can take both sections of the tests at different times, if you like. But if you don’t complete both parts within 24 months of each other, you will have to redo them.
To pass the hazard perception test, you’ll need to score a minimum of 67 out of 100. For the theory test, you need a pass mark of 85 out of 100.
If you pass both sections, you’ll be presented with an LGV theory test certificate which you can then use to book your practical test. But you’ll also need to pass your CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence) qualification if you want to drive professionally.

Are there different types of HGV licences?
HGV licences come in three varieties, which correspond to three different vehicle weights:
• The 7.5 Ton Cat C1 licence
• The Class 2 Cat C licence
• The Class 1 Cat C + E licence
Each licence gives you the qualification needed to drive only that weight of vehicle, so if you wish to drive the largest, heaviest vehicles, you will need to progress through each until you reach the largest – the Cat C + E licence.
What can you drive on each HGV licence?
In order to drive such large vehicles, you will need a specific licence type – which is explored below in more detail.
The 7.5 Ton Cat C1 licence
If you are looking to drive rigid vehicles weighing between 3.5 tonnes and 7.5 tonnes, sometimes called final mile lorries, this licence is for you.
On this licence you can also drive ambulances, some removal vehicles, supermarket delivery vehicles, and horseboxes.
It is important to note that if you gained your Cat B (car) licence before 1st January 1997, you don’t need to add any further entitlement to your licence to drive a vehicle up to 7.5 tonnes – as you will have what is called Grandfather rights.
These Grandfather rights stop people from losing their jobs, in this case driving jobs, as the rules change. It ensures current drivers are deemed safe until proven otherwise because they have been performing the skill (driving a vehicle up to 7.5 tonnes) for some time.
If you got your licence on 2nd January 1997 or later, you would have to pass the C1 test to gain the entitlement to your licence.
Similarly, if you wish to drive Cat 1, or any large vehicles explored below professionally, no matter when you passed your test, you will need to pass the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC).

The Class 2 Cat C licence
For vehicles over 7.5 tonnes with rigid bases that do not exceed 32 tonnes, including a trailer weighing up to 750kg, you will need a Cat C licence.
These lorries are best for driving on larger roads and generally make local and domestic deliveries.
Drivers on this licence are also qualified to drive fire engines, large removal trucks, and refuse or recycling lorries, as well as anything from the 7.5 Ton Cat C1 licence.
The Class 1 Cat C + E licence
If you dream of cruising in the largest vehicles on UK roads, you’ll need a Cat C + E licence – which includes all articulated vehicles of up to 44 tonnes with a detachable trailer.
Articulated HGVs are usually used for longer haul, motorway routes in the UK but can travel across Europe and the continents of the world making deliveries and picking up orders – so are perfect for drivers with an itch to explore and no commitments at home.
With this licence, you can drive drawbar or articulated vehicles, any vehicles above 7.5 tonnes, tractors with a long trailer, and anything from the 7.5 Ton Cat C1 licence and the Class 2 Cat C licence. Compared to a trailer license which only allows you to drive a trailer.

Recent government changes to the Class 1 Cat C + E test and licence
At the time of publication, new rules currently in place as of November 15th 2021, apply directly to HGV trainees learning to drive Cat C and Cat C + E lorries.
These changes mean that you now don’t have to pass the Class 2 Cat C test to move onto the Cat C + E licence if you have a provisional lorry licence.
You can move straight from gaining your 7.5 Ton Cat C1 licence to training and gaining your Class 1 Cat C + E licence – which can save some HGV drivers valuable time.
However, if you don’t want to drive articulated lorries and are happier in a Cat C rigid lorry, you don’t need to – instead, simply complete the training and test for vehicles on the Class 2 Cat C licence.

So, how long does it take to train as an HGV driver? Read on to find out once and for all.
How long is the process from start to finish?
To complete every step, we expect it will take you around 2-3 months to retrain as an HGV driver.
This means that it is possible to be ready for your new career in no time at all!
However, as some of the drivers we train have already started the process, it could be even quicker again depending on how many of the stages you have completed historically.
Step One: Complete the D2 and D4 forms
The very first step of HGV training includes filling in your D2 and D4 application forms, which are available from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) and in your Welcome pack when you book the course. Your dedicated HGVTN Training Coordinator will help you with this and will also arrange your medical test on your behalf.
The D2 application form puts the correct lorry entitlement on your license as a learner – allowing you to begin your HGV training. You will then take your D4 form to your medical test to be passed as medically fit to drive a large road vehicle.
Your medical test simply includes assessing your eyesight and blood pressure, as well as your general health, so it is nothing to be nervous about.
How long will this take?
HGVTN can book medical tests on your behalf in as little as 3-4 days. We would advise that you use this time while you wait for your appointment to revise for your theory tests and fill out the paperwork for your D2 application – allowing you to use your time effectively.
Once the D2 and D4 forms have been completed and sent off with your driver’s licence, the DVLA can take between 1-3 weeks to process your licence and return it to you.
Step Two: Revise for and complete your theory test
Just like obtaining a driving licence for a car, there is a theoretical component of the testing you need to pass to gain your HGV licence.
You should aim to start your theory revision as soon as you can, which when partnered with HGVTN’s online theory test software – will ensure you are ready to pass your test in no time.
The test comes in three parts and includes multiple-choice questions, a hazard perception test, and a CPC Module 2 case studies test.
How long will this take?
How long this stage takes is up to you, as you should only take the theory tests when you feel ready and confident that you will pass. This means that for some it could take a few weeks, and for others, a few months.
However, it is important to remember that you don’t need to wait for your D2 and D4 paperwork to be complete before you start revising. You can start this as early as you would like which will help you to speed up the process if you want to get out on the open road sooner rather than later.
Step Three: Commence practical training and take your practical test
This next stage involves beginning your 5-day intensive driving course in the run-up to your practical test.
This takes place over 5 days, starting on Monday morning, and culminating on Friday afternoon with your practical test.
The practical test includes vehicle safety questions and 1 hour of road driving, including 10 minutes of independent driving where you must make decisions without the assistance of your driving examiner.
Your week of practical HGV training from HGVTN will allow you to navigate confidently and capably on the roads while answering the vehicle safety questions – just as you did during your car driving test.
Our high-quality and experienced instructors will work one-on-one with you during the week to prepare you for your practical test – ensuring you can drive safely, show awareness, and anticipate other road users while dealing with hazards.
How long will this take?
This part of your HGV driver journey will be completed in one working week, from Monday to Friday, inclusive.
Part Four: CPC tests
This last stage of the process includes achieving your Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) qualification – something much of the industry now insists on if you are to drive professionally.
This extra qualification has been introduced to improve road safety and maintain high standards of driving, which is essential given the size and weight of the HGVs on the road.
The CPC qualification is made up of two modules, named Module 2 and 4, which are completed alongside your theory tests and practical training respectively.
Module 2 is theoretical and involves answering multiple-choice questions on a computer – HGVTN offers all students access to our CPC theory training software to allow you to practice and revise for this test.
Module 4 is practical but does not include driving. Instead, it focuses on demonstrating skills that HGV drivers will rely on when working, including checking vehicle loading, using restraining devices to secure a load, and checking the vehicle is roadworthy before entering a public highway.
Once completed and passed, drivers will be issued their initial DQC which is valid for 5 years. When this has elapsed, drivers must undertake further periodic driver CPC training – 35 hours every 5 years.
How long does this take?
The Module 2 test is completed while you sit your theory tests, meaning that you don’t have to spend time commuting back and forth from the theory test centre throughout your training.
The Module 4 test will be booked in for you during your practical training week, which means that when you complete your practical test on the Friday afternoon you will have all of the qualifications you need to start your new career!

1.Become familiar with the HGV training theory test topics
You’ll be quizzed on several topics focusing on different aspects of HGV driving, just like a standard driving test. Some of the subjects include but aren’t limited to:

3.Take plenty of practice tests
Blindly taking your theory test without practising beforehand will likely end in failure as you won’t be familiar with the test format and conditions.
To ensure you’re fully prepared for the real deal and that there are no surprises, we recommend completing as many practice tests as possible under test conditions.
You’ll have 1 hour and 15 minutes for your multiple-choice questions and 45 minutes for the hazard perception part of the test – so ensure you complete your practice theory test within this time frame in complete silence without revision materials.

4.Practice your hazard perception

Government funding for HGV training has allowed thousands of people to take HGV driver training and enter the world of HGV driving as a career.
Originally announced in 2021, the funding scheme was designed to bring new drivers into the industry, to make up for losses that came about as a result of the pandemic and Brexit, along with the current HGV driver shortage.
Government-funded HGV training courses and HGV skills bootcamps in 2022 were very popular, which is one of the reasons the government announced it was extending the HGV training funding scheme into 2023. Can you tell me how I can get a job driving heavy goods vehicles?
To become a driver of a HGV vehicle, there are a few ways to go about it. If you want to obtain your HGV licence, you have different options: you can go to a driving school, become an intern at a company and work your way up the ladder, or you can be hired by a trucking company as a driver and then be trained in-house by them.
Regardless of the route you choose, if you intend to drive an HGV in the future, you will need to pass both a theory test and a practical driving test in order to become certified as a HGV driver. You’ll find that the theory test will cover topics such as vehicle safety, UK traffic laws, and hours of service regulations. An HGV practical driving test is more tailored to trucks than the normal UK driving test and is one that will assess your ability to drive safely and securely in a heavy goods vehicle.
What is the cost of becoming an HGV driver in the UK?
It is difficult to give a definitive answer to this question because it can depend on several factors, such as the type of training provider you choose and the level of certification you aim to achieve. Is driving an HGV a difficult task?

Company dealt with me extremely well from start to finish. Office staff helpful, friendly and I literally just sent them my documents and show up on said dates nothing else required from my side. With the practical my instructor Phil was amazing. Very patient, very funny managed to teach and guide from a complete novice to being able to man pass first time in all tests. I contacted HGV Training Network to train to become a C+E driver. All steps were clearly outlined to me before continuing.
